Abstract

940,794. Lap forming; carding engines; fibrous fabrics. F. KALWAITES. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 43738/59. Headings D1N and D1R. In the preparation of fibre webs having no predominant direction of fibre orientation, fibres are transferred from one carding surface to a second that moves at a speed less than 45% of that of the first surface. The webs may contain cotton, silk, wool, vicuna, mohair, alpaca, flax, ramie, jute, abaca, cuprammonium, viscose, other regenerated cellulose fibres, cross-linked cellulosic fibres, cellulose acetate, triacetate or other - including saponifiedesters, polyamides, such as nylon 420, nylon 6 (polycaprolactam), nylon 66 (hexamethylene diamine-adipic acid), nylon 610 (hexamethylene diamine-sebacic acid), nylon 11 (11-amino undecanoic acid), protein fibres, halogenated hydrocarbon fibres such as polytetrafluoroethylene, hydrocarbon fibres such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutadiene, polyisobutylene, polyester fibres, vinyl, nitrile, dinitrile and acrylic fibres, and mineral fibres such as glass and metal. Fibre lengths may vary from about # inch to 2¢ inches or more, but fibres of papermaking length, i.e. down to 1/16 inch or less may be added in minor proportions. Examples of papermaking fibres are wood pulp, wood fibres, cotton linters, cotton hull shavings, asbestos and rock wool. The first carding surface may be that of a doffing cylinder 10 and the second formed by a worker roll 12 clothed either with metallic clothing or card fillets and adjustably positioned relative to the doffing cylinder. A stripper and/or drafting roll 14 may be provided to follow the worker roll 12, with surface speed ratios upto 5 : 1. To obtain heavy webs, such as up to 1, 800 grains per square yard, several individual webs may be combined.
