Abstract
954,594. Radiation absorbing material. GENTEX CORPORATION. June 12,1962, No. 22496/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6R. Flexible radiation shielding material comprises a major amount by weight (e.g. 98.5%) of powdered lead, a minor amount by weight (e.g. 1. 0%) of silicone rubber, and a lesser amount by weight (e.g. 0. 5%) of fibre flock. The silicone rubber may be polydimethyl-siloxane or other types in which a small percentage of the methyl groups have been replaced by vinyl or phenyl groups. The fibre flock may be of wool, cotton, rayon, polyethylene, or nylon. To form the shielding material, the ingredients may be mixed and thinned with a small amount of toluene or xenol; benzoyl peroxide may be added as a curing agent, the mixture rolled into sheets, and cured by heating, e.g. at 260‹F. and 480‹F. Alternatively, curing may take place at room temperature by adding accelerators such as dithiocarbamates, carbon disulphide, or zinc mercaptobenzothiazole. A fabric may be attached to one or both sides of the sheet by means of adhesive containing silicone rubber and fibre flock. The fabric may be a heat resistant cloth as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,884,018. In another embodiment, two shielding layers are joined together and sandwiched between two fabric layers. The material may be made into protective clothing or used to shield parts of the body during medical treatment with ionizing radiation. Specification 954,593 also is referred to.
