[Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a gas turbine engine of the kind comprising a first turbine which drives the engine compressor and a second turbine independent of the first which provides the useful power, there being a first drive connection including a one-way drive arrangement from the power turbine shaft to an accessory drive shaft, a second drive connection also including a one-way drive arrangement from the compressor turbine shaft to the accessory drive shaft, the arrangement being such that the greater speed of rotation imparted to the accessory drive shaft by either the first or the second one-way drive arrangement will impart rotation to the accessory drive shaft. The engine shown comprises a compressor 14 and a turbine 24 mounted on a common shaft 30 and a separate power turbine 26 mounted on a shaft 32 which extends through the hollow compressor turbine shaft 30 and which supplies useful power at the forward end 34. Annular combustion equipment is provided at 20. Accessory power drive mechanism is indicated at 36 and comprises an accessory drive shaft 40 which is connected by a first drive connection 42 to the power turbine shaft 32 and by a second drive connection 38 to the compressor turbine shaft 30. The first drive connection 42 comprises gearing 60, 62, 64, shaft 66 and one-way drive device 68. The second drive connection 38 comprises gearing 44, 46, shaft 48, gearing 50, 52, 54, 56 and one-way drive device 58. The relative reduction gear ratio of the two drives is chosen so that above a certain compressor turbine/ power turbine speed ratio, the power turbine drive will rotate the shaft 40 through the clutch device 68 at a faster speed than that achieved by the compressor turbine to the clutch device 58, whereby the necessary load is taken over by the power turbine for the major portion of the engine operation.
