L’impiego delle sigarette elettroniche, quale dispositivo sostitutivo del fumo, non è tuttavia esente da problemi, in relazione alla composizione della sostanza inalabile. In particolare risulta generalmente problematica la presenza del glicole propilenico, comunemente usato nella soluzione come eccipiente vaporizzabile insieme al glicerolo vegetale e all’acqua per diluire la nicotina, in quanto sostanza altamente igroscopica. Il glicole propilenico è ottenuto mediante sintesi chimica dal propilene, un gas prodotto industrialmente attraverso il cracking di idrocarburi più pesanti. Più specificamente il glicole propilenico è ottenuto dalla reazione di idratazione dell’ossido di propilene. Il glicole propilenico contiene tracce di petrolio derivanti dal processo di lavorazione e di conseguenza, se è presente in elevate quantità, contribuisce a enfatizzare la sensazione nota ai fumatori come “colpo in gola”, dovuta principalmente alla nicotina. La presenza di glicole propilenico nella soluzione può tuttavia comportare una serie di effetti negativi sull’utilizzatore, quali in particolare la comparsa di sensibilizzazioni e/o allergie. Sono stati altresì rilevati altri effetti collaterali derivanti dall’inalazione del glicole propilenico, quali irritazioni delle vie respiratorie, nausea, vertigini, tachicardia e sudorazione.
