Abstract
Description
電流で励起されると発光する薄膜材料を使用する有機発光デバイス(OLED)は、フラットパネルディスプレイ技術の次第に一般的な形のものになりつつある。OLED構造には、現在、三つの支配的なタイプ、即ち「ダブルヘテロ構造」(DH)OLED、「シングルヘテロ構造」(SH)OLED、および単層重合体OLEDがある。DH OLEDでは、図1Aに示されるとおり、透明基板10が陽極層11でコーティングされている。その陽極11の上に薄い(100〜500Å)有機正孔輸送層(HTL)12が堆積されている。そのHTL12の表面には薄い(典型的には50〜500Å)発光層(EL)13が堆積されている。そのEL13は、厚さ100〜500Åの電子輸送層14(ETL)から注入された電子と、HTL12からの正孔との再結合部位を提供する。従来技術のETL、ELおよびHTL用材料の例は米国特許第5,294,870号明細書に開示されており、その開示を引用により本明細書に援用する。
本発明は、実質的に透明な陽極;その陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;その正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;その発光層を覆う障壁層(blocking layer);その障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;およびその電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んで成るピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスを包含する。
本明細書で用いられる次の成句または用語は次の意味を有する。
本発明は、実質的に透明な陽極;その陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;その正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;その発光層を覆う障壁層;その障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;およびその電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んで成る発光デバイスを包含する。本発明のデバイスにおいて使用される障壁層は、励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げ、かくしてそれら励起子を発光層内に実質的に保持してデバイス効率を高める。
図3に示される燐光電界発光デバイス500を、常用の堆積技術を用いて形成した。このデバイス500はガラス基板510の上に次の層を堆積して含んでいた:インジウムスズ酸化物から成る陽極511、NPDから成る厚さ約450ÅのHTL512、約8%のPtOEPでドープされたCBPから成る厚さ約400ÅのEL513、BCPから成る厚さ約80Åの障壁層514、Alq3から成る厚さ約250ÅのETL515、マグネシウム−銀合金から成る厚さ約1000Åのコンタクト層516、および銀から成る厚さ500Åの陰極517。
Claims (20)
- ピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスであって、前記ピクセルが: 実質的に透明な陽極;
前記陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;
前記正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;
前記発光層を覆う障壁層;
前記障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;および、前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んでなる、発光デバイス。 - 前記障壁層が、発光層中に形成された励起子のエネルギー準位より大きいバンドギャップにより特徴付けられる、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記障壁層が、BCP、Alq3、CBPおよびNPDからなる群から選ばれる材料を含む、請求項2に記載のデバイス。
- 前記障壁層がBCPを含む、請求項3に記載のデバイス。
- 前記発光層がPtOEPでドープされたCBPを含む、請求項4に記載のデバイス。
- 前記陽極がインジウムスズ酸化物を含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記発光層が電子輸送層としても機能する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記発光層が燐光によって発光する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記発光層が有機ホスト中の燐光物質を含む、請求項8に記載のデバイス。
- 前記燐光物質がPtOEPを含み、そして前記有機ホストがCBPを含む、請求項9に記載のデバイス。
- 前記発光層が蛍光によって発光する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記陽極の下に透明な基板をさらに含んでいる、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記基板がガラスを含む、請求項12に記載のデバイス。
- 前記陰極が、アルミニウム、銀、金およびそれらの合金からなる群から選ばれる金属を含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
- 前記電子輸送層と前記陰極との間にコンタクト層をさらに含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。

- ピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスであって、前記ピクセルが:
透明な基板;
前記基板を覆う、インジウムスズ酸化物からなる実質的に透明な陽極;
前記陽極を覆う、NPDを含む正孔輸送層;
前記正孔輸送層を覆う、CBPを含み、燐光によって発光する発光層;
前記発光層を覆う、BCPを含む障壁層;
前記障壁層を覆う、Alq3を含む電子輸送層;および
前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極
を含む、発光デバイス。 - 複数のピクセルを含んでいる多色ディスプレイデバイスであって、前記ピクセルの少なくとも一つが:
実質的に透明な陽極;
前記陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;
前記正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;
前記発光層を覆う障壁層;
前記障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;および
前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含む、多色ディスプレイデバイス。 - 前記障壁層が、発光層中で形成された励起子のエネルギー準位より大きいバンドギャップにより特徴付けられる、請求項18に記載のデバイス。
- 請求項18に記載のデバイスを組み込んでいる電子装置であって、コンピューター;テレビジョン;壁、劇場またはスタジアム用の大面積スクリーン;ビルボード;標識;車両;プリンター;電気通信装置;および電話機からなる群から選ばれる電子装置。
