Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily produce automobile exhaust gas sensor stable against thermal inpact, by using mixed crystal of ZrO2 phase of cubic system and ZrO2 of monoclinic system having low Y2O3 content as the solid electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: ZrO2 powder of which average grain size is 0.05 to 0.3 μm and Y2O3 powder of 4 to 8 mol% thereof are mixed, and, as required, sintering additive such as SiO2 is added. The mixture is temporarily baked at about 1300°C, and crushed, and then formed into a bag tube shape by means of a proper binder. This form is baked at 1350 to 1550°C in the air, and a mixed phase is formed, which consists of a first ZrO2 phase which is in cubic system at room temperature, and a second ZrO2 which is inmonoclinic system at room temperature having average Y2O3 concentration of 0.01 to 1 mol% and existing quantity of 10 to 50 mol%. Thus, the phase transition temperature between the monoclinic system and tetragonal system is raised, so that the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramics may be reduced.
