Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a modified starch useful as a sizing agent for paper, etc. and giving improved film strength and adhesive force, without using a complicated and harardous process, by graft-polymerizing a specific monomer, etc. onto a starch molecule as a backbone polymer in the presence of a initiator.
CONSTITUTION: (A) Natural and/or processed starch as backbone polymers are graft-polymerized with (B) a monomer component consisting essentially of an allyl group-containing monomer I (R1 and R2 are H or methyl; R3 is H or 1W5C alkyl; n is 0 or integer of 1W20) at 10W95°C in the presence of a graft initiator (e.g. a ceric salt) to give a modified starch II (m is integer of ≥1). A modified starch provided by introducing double bond-containing substituents, e.g. allyl group etc., to starch can be used as the backbone polymer.
