Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an antiknock dope, economically, by reacting methanol with isobutylene in the presence of a silicomolybdic acid (salt) catalyst using silica gel as a carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene (1 mole) is made to react with methanol (pref. 0.2W 10 moles) in the presence of a silicomolybdic acid (salt) catalyst supported by porous silica gel, at, e.g. 60W120°C and 1W100 atm. The isobutylene and the methanol may be of industrial grades.
