Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ethylene in a high conversion without by-products, by dehydrating ethanol in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst, having a high activity and long life, and consisting of aluminum dihydrogentripolyphosphate having a very high acidity alone or in combination with another substance.
CONSTITUTION: Ethanol is dehydrated in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst consisting of aluminum dihydrogentripolyphosphate alone or in combination with another substance, e.g. aluminum oxide or hydroxide, to give ethylene. The catalyst has a good reproducibility of high activity and long life and will not reduce the activity even on standing in air during the preparation thereof. The catalyst has a high acidity, e.g. 5W20meg/g, as a solid acid, provides a high reaction rate, and is usable continuously for a long time.
