Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the desired product in a high yield by electrolytically oxidizing a soln. 3,5-dialkoxy-4-hydroxytoluene and a base in an org. solvent while passing the soln. through the narrow gap path between a cathode and an anode at a specified linear velocity.
CONSTITUTION: A casing 1 is provided with a blind flange 2, an inlet 3 feeding liq. starting material for reaction and an outlet 4 discharing a product. The casing is made of electrically conductive metallic material for generating hydrogen, and the inner surface is used as a cathode. A core-shaped anode 9 made of carbon material is held in the casing 1 with rings 10, 11 as spacers so as to make the section circular. As a result, a narrow gap 12 having a circular section is formed between the casing 1 as the cathode and the anode 9. A soln. of 3,5-dialkoxy-4-hydroxytoluene and a base in an org. solvent is fed to the gap 12 from the inlet 3 and passed through the gap at ≥10cm/sec linear velocity. During the passing the soln. is electrolyzed at 1W100A/dm2 current density, and the resulting 3,5-dialkoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is discharged from the outlet 4.
