Abstract

PURPOSE: The solution polymerization of a radically polymerizable monomer is conducted in the presence of a specific acrylic or methacrylic vinyl copolymer and the resultant polymer is neutralized with a base to produce the titled resin that forms coating films with high water resistance and shows good air-curing properties.
CONSTITUTION: The polymerization of a radically polymerizable monomer, preferably an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic alkyl ester is conducted in an organic solvent in the presence of a vinyl copolymer containing as structural units, 0.5W50wt% of an acrylic ester or methacrylic ester having a cyclic unsaturated compound of formula I [R1 is H, methyl; R2 is formula II, III, IV or V (R3 is H, methyl)] and 5W50wt% of an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, preferably further an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic alkyl ester. The resultant polymer is neutralized with a base such as triethylamine to produce the objective resin.
