Abstract

도심 지역에서 또는 케이블 네트워크 상에서 텔레비전 스테이션의 수가 증가함에 따라, 시청자에게 제공되는 잠재된 관심사에 대한 프로그램 수가 급격히 상승하였다. 위성 신호를 직접 수신할 수 있는 원반형 안테나를 사용하여, 시청자가 이용할 수 있는 프로그램이 또한 다수로 증가하였다.

본 발명은 일반적으로 전자 프로그램 가이드로서 TV 스크린 상에 디스플레이되는 텔레비전 스케줄 정보에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로, 가이드를 벗어남이 없이 가이드 재포맷 기능(reformatting function)에 액세스하기 위한 시스템 및 방법에 관한 것이다.

EPG 시스템의 개요
광고 메시지는 EPG 데이터베이스 내에 저장되거나 또는 외부 소스로부터 수신될 수 있다. 그레이징/브라우징 팝업 포맷은 ROM 내에 저장된 데이터에 의해 발생되는 상수 영역(constant area) 및 데이터베이스 내에 저장되거나 또는 실시간으로 제공되는 갱신 가능한 데이터에 기초하여 텍스트 및 그래픽을 기술하는 가변 영역(variable area)을 갖는 메모리 내에 저장되는 그래픽 객체를 포함한다.
상기 팝업은 광고 또는 기타 메시지를 디스플레이하기 위한 가변 영역을 포함하며, 이하 상세히 기술되는 광고 목록 데이터 구조 내에 저장되는 내용을 구비한다.
바람직한 실시예에서, 본 발명의 전자 프로그램 가이드는 개인용 컴퓨터, PCTV, 셋톱박스에 연결되는 텔레비전, 또는 커스텀 보드를 포함하는 텔레비전 중 하나에 구현될 수 있다. 하지만, 본 발명은 임의의 특정 하드웨어 구성에 국한되지 않으며, 컴퓨터 및 텔레비전 시스템의 신규 조합이 개발되는 경우 유용성을 증가시킬 것이다. 이하, 전술한 것들 중 어느 것이든지 종종 "TV 시스템"으로 불릴 것이다. 대표적인 TV 시스템의 블록도가 도 2에 예시되어 있다. 상세한 부분은본 발명이 임의의 특정 TV 시스템에 국한되지 않기 때문에 예시되지 않는다.

보드 설명(board description)

온-스크린 디스플레이 제어기 및 정형기(OSDCF; 124)는 입/출력 제어기, 온-스크린 디스플레이 제어기(OSD), 및 폐쇄-캡션 데이터(closed-caption data; CCD)VBI 데이터 슬라이서로 작용한다. 상기 VBI(수직 블랭킹 구간)는 상기 텔레비전 신호를 스크린의 하부부터 상부까지의 주사 전자빔을 재배치하도록 허용하는 TV 신호 내의 데드 영역(dead space)이다. 디지털 데이터, 예를 들어, 폐쇄-캡션 데이터는 상기 VBI 중에 캐리어 신호 상으로 변조된다.

스케줄 탐색
특정 시간에 대한 스케줄 정보를 획득하고 프로그램 그리드 내에 상기 스케줄 정보를 디스플레이시키기 위해, 여러 단계들이 요구된다. 채널 목록 내의 각각의 채널에 대해, 해당 날짜의 쇼 목록이 액세스되고 스캐닝된다. 채널에 대한 수평 블록이 선택된 시간을 포함하는 쇼 시간대의 기간에 따라 크기가 정해진다. 각각의 쇼 시간대에 의해 참조된 쇼 타이틀 엔트리가 액세스되며, 상기 쇼 타이틀이 쇼 시간대에 대응하여 수평 블록 내에 디스플레이된다.
인기 채널 목록(favorite channel lists)
채널 데이터 테이블 내의 모든 엔트리는 FAVORITE LINK 필드를 포함하다. 이 필드는 다음 인기 채널로의 링크를 포함하며 사용자에 의해 결정된 순서로 상기 채널의 정렬된 링크 목록을 형성하는데 사용된다.

테마 데이터 구조
데이터베이스의 주요 특성은 테마에 의한 단체 쇼 능력이다. 쇼 타이틀 및 쇼 설명 엔트리에 저장된 테마 식별번호가 특정 쇼가 특정 테마에 부합되도록 사용된다. 예를 들면, 시청자는 모든 코미디 영화의 목록을 알고 싶어할 수 있다.
각각의 주 분류, 전술한 예의 영화는 도 9에 도시된 테마 분류 테이블 내에 포함되는 테마 분류 엔트리를 갖는다. 테마 분류 엔트리는 테마 분류 식별번호, 서브-분류 핸들 테이블에 대한 핸들, 및 테마 분류 명을 포함한다. 테마 분류 식별번호는 이러한 주 분류에 대해 테마 서브-분류, 전술한 예에서 영화를 식별하는데 사용된다.

테마 탐색
시청자가 특정 종류의 쇼, 예를 들어, 코미디 영화를 탐색하기 시작하는 경우, 각각의 채널이 조사되고, 각각의 쇼 목록의 식별번호는 영화 주 분류 엔트리에 대응하는 테마 서브-분류 테이블의 코미디 엔트리 내에 저장된 테마 식별번호와 비교된다. 테마 식별번호와 부합되는 쇼에 대한 정보가 사용자 인터페이스 로컬 버퍼 내의 테마 탐색 데이터 구조에 저장된다.
테마 탐색 기능은 상기 데이터베이스에 2개의 호출을 필요로 한다. 이들 중 제1 호출은 탐색 시간으로부터 쇼 시간 오프셋을 포함하는 특정 채널 엔트리에 대해 테마 분류에 부합되는 제1 쇼에 상기 테마 탐색 데이터 구조를 초기화한다. 제2 호출은 특정 오프셋 시간 이후 다음의 부합하는 쇼를 발견하고 테마 탐색 데이터 구조를 갱신하며 다음의 부합하는 쇼의 시작 오프셋을 복구한다.

광고 및 N.E.W.S. 데이터 구조

데이터베이스 구축

상기 데이터베이스 엔진은 임의의 쇼 목록 내에 포함되는 모든 SID 및 DID에 대해 메모리 내의 저장 위치를 생성한다. 부합하는 SID 및 DID를 갖는 커맨드 내에 포함되는 정보는 참조된 메모리 영역에 기록된다. 실제로 상기 SID 및 DID는 보다 효율적인 탐색을 위해 해싱 시스템(hashing system)에 의해 처리된다.

DBS 시스템에서 비디오 베이스밴드 신호가 디지털화되고 압축되며 아날로그 캐리어 신호로 변조된다. 진전된 압축 기술 때문에, 하나의 프로그램을 전송하는데 사용되는 캐리어는 4개의 프로그램을 전송할 수 있다. 통상적으로, 비디오 신호에 추가하여, 오디오, VBI(폐쇄 캡션 및 텔레텍스트와 같은 수직 블랭킹 구간 정보 데이터), 프로그램 가이드 정보, 및 조건부 액세스 정보와 같은 기타 비트 스트림 인코딩 정보가 개별 비트 스트림으로, 다중화된 복합 비트 스트림으로, 및 변조된 캐리어 신호로 제공된다.
대안적으로, 데이터베이스 자신은 디지털 데이터 스트림 내에 전송될 수 있다. 예를 들면, DSS에서 프로그램 가이드 정보는 36 채널에 대해 3시간의 프로그램 블록으로 전송된다. 프로그램은 상이한 대역으로 디지털적으로 변조된다. 도 6에 도시된 바와 같이, 위성은 상이한 대역 상에 동시에 전송되는 여러 변환기(500)를 갖는다. 여러 채널이 디지털 압축 기술을 사용하여 단일 대역으로 변조될 수 있다. 현재의 프로그램을 포함하는 비트 스트림이 모든 대역에 의해 이동된다. 하지만, 상이한 채널 블록에 대한 장래의 프로그램은 상이한 대역 상에 전송된다. 상기 블록은 특정 시간 대역이 수신되기 전에 지연될 수 있도록 순환식(carousel) 루프 또는 무한 루프 내에 전송된다.
시청자 위치에서 디코더는 16 캐리어를 수신하고 하나의 캐리어를 선택하도록 동조기/복조기를 제어한다. 상기 캐리어는 샘플링되고, 디코딩되며, 에러-정정되고 복조되어 여러 비트 스트림으로 개별화된다. 상기 디코더는 압축된 비디오를 실제로 임의 크기인 재구성 화면으로 신장시키는 하나 이상의 비디오 디코더 칩을 포함한다.

케이블에 대해, 상기 데이터베이스는 SST 헤드 단부에 구축되며 케이블 헤드 단부에 지상 선로를 거쳐 전송된다. 케이블 회사는 예를 들어, VBI, 위성 디지털 데이터 비트 스트림 등을 통해 자신들이 원하는 임의의 장소로 데이터를 전송할 수 있다.
사용자 인터페이스

모든 정의된 스크린에 대해, 진입 기능, 탈출 기능, 갱신 기능, 및 요구-핸들링 기능의 어레이가 있다. 상기 진입 기능은 상태가 모든 필요한 데이터를 수집하고 상기 스크린을 포맷하도록 먼저 진입하는 경우 호출된다. 상기 탈출 기능은 상기 스크린에 대해 메모리 및 데이터를 해제하기 위해 호출된다. 갱신 기능은 예를 들면, 상기 스크린 상에 디스플레이되는 임의의 정보가 갱신될 필요가 있는 경우 스크린 시간을 갱신하고 상기 스크린을 다시 작성하도록 분당 1회 호출된다.

팝업 메시지 시스템의 상세한 설명

다른 실시예에서, 팝업은 어떠한 정보 메시지 없이 디스플레이되는 텔레비전 프로그램과 서로 관련이 있는 광고 메시지일 수 있다.
도 1은 전술되었다. 텔레비전(10)은 스크린(12) 상에 텔리캐스트 텔레비전 프로그램을 디스플레이한다. 바람직한 실시예에서, 사각형의 팝업 영역(14)은 광고 목록 데이터 구조에 저장되는 데이터에 기초하여 광고 메시지를 동시에 디스플레이하는 제1 가변 영역(16)을 포함한다. 상기 제1 가변 영역(16)은 상이한 광고가 그 내부에 디스플레이되는 점에서 가변적이며, 데이터 제공자에 의해 선택되는 계획에 따라 좌우된다. 예를 들면, 상이한 광고는 텔레비전이 동조되는 채널 각각에 대해 디스플레이될 수 있다. 또는 상이한 광고는 브라우징 모드 또는 그레이징 모드가 초기화되는 경우마다 순환식(rotational basis)으로 제공될 수 있다. 또는 상이한 광고는 소정의 광고 사이클에 따라 기설정 시간 이후 디스플레이될 수 있다. 또는 상이한 광고는 디스플레이되는 텔레비전 프로그램의 전후 관계에 따라디스플레이될 수 있다. 상기 팝업 영역(14)은 타이틀, 남은 시간, 채널 등과 같은 디스플레이되는 쇼의 내용과 관련이 있는 정보를 디스플레이하는 제2 가변 영역(18)을 또한 포함한다. 상기 제2 가변 영역(18)은 쇼가 변경되는 경우 정보가 변경되는 점에서 가변적이다. 원하는 경우, 팝업 영역(14)은 시청될 텔레비전 프로그램과 관련이 있는 정보 또는 시청자에게 관심을 끄는 정보를 디스플레이하는 다른 고정 영역 또는 가변 영역을 포함할 수 있다. 대안적으로, 가변 영역들(16, 18)은 스크린 영역(12) 없이 디스플레이될 수 있고, 제2 가변 영역(18)이 제거될 수 있다. 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이 상기 스크린의 중앙 근처에 상기 팝업을 두드러지게 디스플레이하는 것이 흔히 바람직하지만, 상기 팝업은 하부 여백과 같이 벗어난 위치에 디스플레이될 수 있다. 또한 팝업의 형상은 예를 들어, 풍선 또는 직사각형, 또는 원형과 같이 상이할 수 있다. 또한 팝업의 크기, 즉 팝업의 배경에 의해 점유되는 공간은 변경할 수 있으며, 디스플레이될 메시지의 크기에 따라 좌우된다.

상기 광고의 내용은 목록 데이터 구조 내의 텍스트 또는 그래픽 엔트리를 갱신하도록 커맨드를 전송함으로써 변경된다.
복합 EPG 및 광고 시스템의 상세한 설명
상이한 모드에서 수신된 텔레비전 프로그램 또는 비디오 클립과 같은 영상, 및 EPG를 대안적으로 디스플레이하는 점은 잘 알려져 있다. 이러한 경우, 상기 EPG는 하나 이상의 단색(solid color) 컬러 배경에서 디스플레이된다. 본 발명의 이러한 특징은 이러한 영상 내에 보유되는 광고 메시지를 구비하는 복합물 내에 상기 EPG를 디스플레이하는 다른 방식을 포함한다.
종래 알려진 바와 같이, 중첩되는 전경(foreground) 그래픽 영상의 일부가 하부에 있는 배경 영상이 드러나도록 투명하게 이루어질 수 있다. 예를 들면, GIF 포맷의 영상에 대해, 투명도 값(transparency value)은 선택된 팔레트(palette) 번호를 갖는 전경 영상의 화소가 상기 배경 영상 내의 화소에 의해 대체될 수 있도록 배경 컬러를 설정할 수 있다.
EPG의 포맷은 도 11a에 예시되며, 광고 메시지의 포맷은 도 11b에 예시된다. 상기 EPG 포맷은 사각형의 외곽선 및 사각형으로 디스플레이되는 문자를 포함한다. 상기 사각형은 통상적으로 그래픽 시스템에 의해 사용되는 팔레트에 대한 팔레트 번호에 대응하는 컬러로 채워진다. 상기 팔레트 번호는 EPG 데이터 및 펌웨어와 함께 RAM 또는 ROM에 저장된다.
따라서, 광고 메시지를 갖는 복합물 내에 도 11a에 도시된 EPG를 디스플레이하기 위해, 여러 사각형을 채우는데 사용되는 컬러에 대한 팔레트 번호는 투명도에 대해 선택될 것이다. 따라서, 배경 영상이 도 11b에 도시된 광고 메시지이고 전경 영상이 도 11a에 도시된 EPG인 경우, 결국 투명한 EPG에 대한 복합 영상이 도 11c에 예시된다. 사용자는 EPG를 단독으로 디스플레이하기 위해 단색 또는 단색들 배경 상에 종래 방법에 따를 것인지 또는 도 11c에 예시된 바와 같이 광고 메시지를 구비하는 복합물 내에 따를 것인지 원격 제어기에 의해 발행되는 커맨드에 의한 선택권을 갖는다. 상기 복합물이 사용자에 의해 선택되는 경우, 마이크로프로세서는 상기 EPG 데이터가 비디오 프로세서에 제공되기 전에 상기 투명도 값을 상기 저장된 배경 컬러 값으로 대체한다. 상기 비디오 프로세서의 출력, 및 광고 메시지는 결합 신호가 디스플레이 구동 회로에 제공되기 전에 혼합된다.
도 11c에 예시된 바와 같이, 배경 영상의 레이아웃은 상기 EPG 영상의 레이아웃을 고려하여야 한다. 배(ship)의 어두운 선체와 중첩되는 글자는 단색으로 눈에 보이지 않는다. 배가 다시 그려지거나 또는 상이한 컬러의 텍스트는 가시성을 향상시키는데 사용될 수 있다.
대안적으로, 전경 영상은 제2 투명 광고일 수 있다. 전경의 배경 부분이 투명하게 이루어지는 경우, 상기 배경 영상은 상기 광고 메시지가 전경 영상의 배경 내에 배치되고 이후 2개의 광고가 동시에 디스플레이될 수 있도록 설계된다.
본 발명에 따르면, 시청자가 브라우징 또는 그레이징하고 있는 경우 메시지를 제공하기 위해 광고/메시지 윈도우가 브라우징 및 그레이징 팝업 내에 제공되며, 브라우징 또는 그레이징 팝업 윈도우 내에 디스플레이되는 메시지의 내용이 EPG 발생 시스템에 의해 제어될 수 있다.

Claims (10)

  1. 현재 방송되는 텔레비전 신호를 재생하는 텔레비전 수상기,
    상기 재생된 텔레비전 신호를 표시하는 디스플레이 모니터,
    상기 재생된 텔레비전 신호로부터의 텔레비전 화상을 상기 모니터에 표시하는 수단,
    표시되는 상기 텔레비젼 화상에 관련된 광고 메시지를 표시하는 수단, 및
    상기 표시되는 텔리비젼 화상과 관련된 정보 메시지를 표시하는 수단
    을 포함하고,
    상기 텔리비젼 화상은 상기 정보 메시지 및 상기 광고 메시지와 동시에 표시되는
    텔레비전 시스템.
  2. 제1항에서,
    상기 정보 및 광고 메시지가 적어도 상기 텔레비전 화상의 일부를 커버하는 팝업 영역(pop-up area)에 표시되는 텔레비전 시스템.
  3. 제2항에서,
    상기 정보 메시지가 상기 재생된 텔레비전 신호로부터의 상기 텔레비전 화상의 내용과 관련있는 텔레비전 시스템.
  4. 제2항에서,
    상기 정보 메시지가 상기 재생된 텔레비전 신호의 채널 상의 향후 예정된 프로그램과 관련있는 텔레비전 시스템.
  5. 제2항에서,
    상기 정보 메시지가 상기 재생된 텔리비젼 신호의 채널 상의 현재 프로그램과 관련있는 텔레비전 시스템.
  6. 제1항에서,
    전자 프로그램 가이드(EPG) 및 광고 메시지의 복합물(composite)을 표시하는 수단을 더 포함하는 텔레비전 시스템.
  7. 제6항에서,
    전자 프로그램 가이드(EPG)를 단독으로 표시하는 수단을 더 포함하는 텔레비전 시스템.
  8. 제6항에서,
    적어도 하나의 저장된 배경 컬러 값(background color value)을 포함하는 EPG 데이터를 저장하는 수단을 더 포함하는 텔레비전 시스템.
  9. 제8항에서,
    상기 저장된 배경 컬러 값을 사용하여 상기 EPG를 단독으로 표시하는 수단을 더 포함하는 텔레비전 시스템.
  10. 제8항에서,
    상기 저장된 배경 컬러 값을 투명한 값으로 대체하여 상기 복합물을 표시하는 수단을 더 포함하는 텔레비전 시스템.
