Description
T a-ll whom it may conce-rn:
intrd tatts JOSEPH W. vWILDER., OF `LEOMI-S'IER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 101,7 99, dated Apr/il l2, 1870.
IMPRO'VED STOVE-PIPE SHELF.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same..
Be it known that I, J osnrn W. Winnen, of Leominster, in the county-of lVoreester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Shelves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my said improvements as applied toa stove-shelf, and so much of a stove as is necessary to illustrate the application of my said invention.
Figure 2 represents a front view of a stove-pipe with my improvements applied thereto, one of the shelves being shown broken off.
Figure 3 represents a sideview with the ends of the shelves shown broken off.
Figure 4 represents a rear view; and
Figure 5 5 represents a section on line A l, iig. 2.
To enable l'those skilled in the the art to which my invent-ion belongs to make and use the same,-I will proceed to describe it more in detail.`
The nat-ure of my invention consists- First, in -a peculiarly-constructed shelf and shank, as hereafter explained.
Second, the combination, with thel shank of th shelf, of a peculiarly-constructed supporting device,
substantially as hereafter described.
Third, the combination, with the stove-shelf sup' porting-rod, of the stove-pipe, clampingipieces, and the stove-shelf supporting-pieces, as hereafter explained.
Fourth, the combination, 'with the clamping-boards,
of the pivot-ed cam clamping-pieces, as lnreaft-er explained.
In the drawings- A represent-s the top plate of the stove; and
B, a section of the .stove-pipe.
C represents the stove-shelf supporting-rod, upon which 'are cast the clamping-piece l), and the. stoveshelf supporting-pieces lE E. v
The stove-shelf supporting-pieces E E are each provided with an upper and lower set of laterally-projecting ear-pieces, (t, provided, in this instance, with six-sided holes b, to receive the six-sided Shanks c, of
the shelves F, as indicated in the drawings.
The upper clamping-piece D is not cast upon the rod G, but is .made with an open loop, as indicated in tig. 5, whereby it can be slipped upon the rod C', and moved up and down at pleasure, to givesupport .to the rod- O, at any desired position between the stoveshelf supporting-pieces E E.
The clamping-pieces D D are iliade with loops l d,
one on each side, to receive the front ends 1 of the' clampiug-bands 2, which are bent around the same, so as to fit -against the pipe B-,as fully indicated in iig. 5.
The rear ends 3 of the clamping-band 2 are bent around loops e e of the clamping-pieces (i G', as also indicated in the drawings.
lhe clamping-piece G is provided with a projection,
f, which serves as a journal for the cam clampingpiccc H, which has arr eccentric slot, g, formed therein, while the clamping-piece G is provided with a projection, i, that passes through the slot g, and the clamping-pieces G G are drawn together by turning the cam clamping-piece H, projections h being formed thereon to facilitate the operation.
The outer edge of the slot r/ may be scalloped or notched, it' desired, to prevent its slipping upon the stud i.
By .casting the clamp-piece D and shelflsupporting pieces E E upon the rod C, as .before explained, the attachment can be iliade very cheaply, while at the same time it is strong, and not liable to get out of order.
Then, again, hy making the shank c oi'. the shelves F, many-sided with corresponding holes in the ears, a a, of the supporting-'pieces E, the shelves canbe readily changed to occnpy'diferent positions, byfsimply lifting them so as to remove the Shanks from their holes, and then turning them -to the desired position,
and replacing the Shanks. Y
By the above construction and arrangcmentvof the shank and ear-pieces (t a, it will be observed that 'the shelves, when once adjusted, will be retained in 'that position, and are not liable to swing back and forth, as they are apt to when supported on a round and smooth journal.
Any desired number of she]ilsupporting pieces E may be cast on the shelf-posts C.
The Shanks c maybe madewith more or less sides, as preferred, corresponding holes being made in the ear-pieces to receive the same.
Having described my improvements in stoveshelves,
-`\Vhat l claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. r1 he stove-shelf F, made with the many-sidedA shank c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
2. The combination, with the stove-shelf shank c and post C, of the shelf-supporting piece E, provided. with ears It (t, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. L
3. The combination, with the post C, of the clamping-pieces D, and shelf-supporting pieces E E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. .Lhe combination, with the postUvand pipe B, I of the clamping-piece D', clamping-bands 2 2,
clamping-pieces G G', and lcam clamping-piece H, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
5. The combination, ,with theclamping-pieces G G', of the cam clamping-piece H, said parts being constructed and arranged for operation substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
