DOOR-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 20, 1911.
Patented Aug. 2?, 1912.
Serial No. 615,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Door-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door fastening devices which may be placed under a door for the purpose of holding the door in a con: venient angle while performing work on the door, such as adjusting looks or dressing the door for the purpose of fitting or finishing the door, and one of the main objects of the invention is to produce a device of the character described, of simple construction which may be readily placed in position for holding the door for the purpose of securing and holding the same.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which may be placed under doors having varying degrees of clearance from the floor.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following description.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only: Figurel is a perspective view of a device embodying a form of my invention, showing the holder under the lower free corner of the door. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center of the device showing a portion of the door in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line afi-w Fig. 2, showing a portion. of the door thereon. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig.
'2, showing the position of the parts of the device when applied to a door having less clearance from the floor than that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line m w Fig. 2.
The device as shown, consists of a floor member or supporting member 1 of sheet metal having a base 2, adapted to rest 011 the floor and terminating at each side in upturned portions or standards 3, each having on its inner face a rib l. Slidable vertically between the two standards 3 of the support ing member 1 is a U-shaped clamping mem her or stirrup 5 having two side arms 6 and a central portion 7. Each side arm 6 of the stirrup adjacent to the central portion 7 is provided with a pair of outward projections or lugs 9 which engage the ribs 4 on the standards 3, and each side arm 6 near the upper end thereof is perforated to receive a bolt 8which extends through a slot 19 in the adjacent standard 3. The heads of the bolts 8 abut against the inner faces of the arms 6 and are each provided with a washer 10 and nut 11 on the outside of the adj acent Standard The lugs 9 in {-i.'a,ement with N 6 of the stirrup 5 is a cammember 12 con- .SlStlIlg of a sheet metal plate having a serles of cam faces 13 arranged at varying distances from the pivot or bolt 8, which cam faces 13 are arranged to engage the upper edge of a head 14 formed on the upper end of the ribs 1 on the standards 3 of the sta tionary member 1. The two cam members 12 terminate in arms 15 extending down? jwardly therefrom, joined at their lower ends by across-piece or connecting member 16.
The cross-piece 16 serves as an operating means for the cam members 12 and is provided in its central portion with a rib 17 for the purpose of giving additional strength to the same.
The upper face of the central portion 7 of the stirrup 5 is provided with a series of projections which are adapted to bite into the wood of the door and thereby prevent any slipping of the door holder.
Each of the heads 14 projects into a vertical slot 6' in the adjacent arms 6 of the stirrup 5 for the purpose of limiting the ven tical sliding movement of the stirrup, the slots 6 being long enough to permit the central portion 7 of the stirrup to enter an opening 2 in the base of the floor member 1 when it is desired to place the holder under a door having very little clearance from the floor.
The device is operated in the following manner: The cam members 12 are turned so that the stirrup 5 is lowered sufficiently to permit the stirrup to be inserted under the outer free, corner of the door 20, and when in such position the cam members 12 are turned by pressing against the operating member 16 with the foot until the one of the cam faces 13, which is the required distance away from the bolt 8 to cause a clamping. action between the central portion 7 of the stirrup and the bottom of the door, is brought into engagement with the adjacent head 14. It will be noted that in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cam members 12 have been turned so that one of the cam faces 18 farthest from shown in Fig. 4, one of the cam faces 13 nearer to the pivot than that in operation in Figs. 1, 2 and is brought into play,
thus permitting the stirrup 5 to bind against the bottom ofadoor which has less clearance than the door illustrated in Figs.
1, '2 and 3. If the door to be worked upon has but ver little clearance asyis illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the cam member 12 would be turned so that the cam face 13 would be brou ht into engagement with the head 14 on t e supportingmember; 1,
andin such position the stirrup 5 would assume the position shown in dotted lines which would-clamp. against the underside of the door and holdthe same rigidly in 30. place while the door. is being-workedupon.
The cam ortions. 13 being arranged on both sides 0. the arms 15 provide for maximum adjustabilit-y of the stirrup. Thus when the.- device is adjusted, as shown in Fig. 2, the stirrup is adjusted for a door the lower edge of which is relatively high, while when in the position shown in Fig. 1, it is adjusted for a door the lower edge of which is relatively low. Any intermediate clamping position is provided by the intermediate cam portions. that I claim is:
A door holder comprising a U-shaped floor member, a stirrup slidable in the floor member and adapted to support the lower edge of the door, a U-shaped cam member, each. arm of which is providedwith a cam at the end thereof and extending around on each side of said arm, each cam portion being pivoted to the adjacent arm of the stir rup, the cam portion on one side of the pivot of each cam being closer to said pivot than the cam portion on the other side, whereby when the cam member is swung into a position on one side of the stirrup the stirrup will be lifted to the highest point and when ROBERT BEVERLY OGDEN.
