To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, ANGEL J. DANCE and` `Minnen B. BiLLUrs, citizens of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Lewis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Halter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in halters.

An object of the present invention is to provide a halter inwhich the various portions of the halter rope are slidably secured together by a looping of the strands of which the rope is formed and so twisting the said loops that they will project at right angles from the longitudinal axis of the rope. n l

A further object is to provide a rope halter in which the strands of the rope are untwisted and formed into loops, there being as many loops as there are strands to the rope, tlie'said loops projecting at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the rope and slidably securing another rope to the said` loops whichv will be therefore held in parallel relation to the first rope.

' A further Objectis to provide a halter formed of a flexible rope'element which is adjustable for animals of varyingy sizes.

A further object .is to `provide a halter comprising an adjustable throat latch, cheek piecesslidably secured thereto and extending behind the horses ears, anda nose band coeXtensive with the cheek pieces and adjustably secured together so that the cheek pieces and nose band may be enlarged or shortened according to the size of the animal. v

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and inf the details of construction hereinafter dcscribed and claimed, it lbeing understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without` departing from the spirit of the invention.

The throat latch then passes downward beneath the horses throat as at Sand is provided with a snap hook 9 slidably secured thereto `and with the free end l0 ofthe rope provided with the interlocking integral loops v1l which engage the portion S of the said throat latch and hold the two ropes infsuch vfrictional relation that it is possible to slide one along the other, it being notedhowever that the saine is accompanied with considerable .friction so that the snap hook may be adjusted by adjusting thelength of the free end of the rope 10. It is thus possible to use the throat latch with animals having various sized heads.

y The nose band 12 is formed integral or in one piece with the cheek piece 13 and is formed substantially as follows Starting with the extreme end 14 of a single length of rope, the same is provided with the spaced loops 15 between which the rope is substantially U-shape as at 16 to form the top portion of the nose band. The rope passes down from one of the loops 15 and is bent upon itself as at 16 so as to forni a slip noose. rlhe manner in which this noose is formed is by providing the rope with an outstanding loop and bending the rope sharply upon itself and passing the same through the loop, the result being that the slip noose or loop 16 is thus provided. rlhe rope then passes through one of the loops 15 and upwardly and rearwardly so as to form the cheek piece 18.

The cheek piece 1S passes rearwardly through the outstanding loop 6 of the throat latch behind the horses ears as at 19 through the loops 5 of the top portion of the throat latch, then forwardly to forln the front cheek piece 13, through the loop 15 downwardly as at 20, forming the under side of the nose band through the slip noose 16 and is then led away as at 21, to provide a suitable lead rope which may be secured to a post or other structure for the tying of the animal upon which the halter is positioned.

The manner in which the strands of the rope are spread apart and twisted into the integral interlocking loops is more clearly illustrated in F ig. 3 of the drawings in which the separate strands are numbered 22, 23 and 24. The various strands are untwisted by rotating the rope in an opposite direction to that in which it was originally formed, thus shortening the vrope and the strand 24 is then brought forwardly as at 25 and formed into a loop 26 the downwardly extending portion 27 being then brought forward and continues as one of the strands 28. The strand 23 is looped upon itself as at 29, the loop being formed beyond the portion 27 of the previous loop so that the various loops interlock in a manner similar to the original sinusoidal twisting of the strands. The particular feature which lends distinct advantage to the using of the outstanding integral interlocking loops as described in connection with the halter lies in the fact that the ropes are held in parallel and frictional relation, and no other device is necessary for th-e holding of the two ropes. Furthermore the ropes are held in parallel relation and in frictional contactso that the ropes will slide when a considerable force is exerted upon one, the other being held stationary. The manner in which the nose band is formed allows the same to immediately adjust itself to the size of the nose of the animal to which the halter is secured, the length of the cheek pieces may be taken up by the same passing through the various loops and a tightening of the lead rope 21. The throat latch is adjustable as previously described which therefore provides that `the entire halter, nose band, cheek pieces and throat latch, are adjustably and may be instantly changed to accommodate the size of the head of the animal with which the halter is used.

Having thus fully described the invention what we claim is 1. A rope halter comprising an adjustable nose band, cheek pieces formed continuously therewith, a throat latch with adjustable ends, and outstanding loops with their planes positioned substantially at right angles to the rope from which they are formed, formed of the strands of rope of the nose band, cheek pieces and throat latch, the number of loops being equal to the number of strands of the ropes from which they are formed for holding the saine in proper relation and permitting adjustment in length of the nose band and cheek pieces;

A device of the class described comprising an adjustable nose band and cheek pieces formed of a single length of rope, one end thereof passing through a slip noose of the nose band, and an adjustable throat latch slidably secured to the upper extremities of the cheek pieces and defining ear receiving openings therewith, portions of said rope being formed with outstanding loops, the adjacent portions of the rope passing through said loops, the various parts held in frictional and proper relation by the outstanding loops formed of the strands of the rope, the number of loops being equal to the number of strands of the rope, and with the planes of the loops positioned substantially at right angles to the axes of the ropes to thereby hold the two ropes in parallel relation, the said loops being prevented from untwisting by the rope which extends therethrough.

3. A halter comprising a single rope formed with outstanding integral loops spaced a distance apart from one end thereof and forming the upper portion of a noseband, the lower portion of the nose band looped upon itself to form a slip noose, the opposite portion of the slip noose extending rearwardly andfforming a cheek piece, the cheek piece bent around and looped upon itself to lie behind the ears of the animal, the rope then projecting forwardly and forming the opposite side cheek piece, the forward portion of the last mentioned cheek piece passing through one of the outstanding interlocking loops of the nose band and passing downwardly through the said slip noose and the end thereof forming a leading rope, and

a throat latch comprising a single length of rope, means secured to the ends thereof for adjusting the length, and outstanding integral interlocking loops engaging the two cheek pieces at the two sides thereof and at the central rear portion thereof to define ear receiving openings therewith.

4. A rope provided With a series of loops, the number thereof being equal to the number of strands of the rope, the said strands .all bent and offset upon the same side of the 10 the said second rope holding the loops from untwisting, and the loops holding the two ropes in parallel relation.
