GRUBBER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2, 1914. Serial No. 864,665.
l vices, and it has for its object to produce an implement of simple and inexpensive construction by means of whlch grubs may be quickly and effectively extracted from the ground with little manual exertion.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this class adapted to engage the stem of the plant that is to be extracted and to afford a suitable hold thereon to enable the roots to be extracted from the ground without danger of cutting or breaking the stem.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying "drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved grubber showing that side which is held upward when the device is in use. Fig. 2 is a view of the opposite side of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse sec tional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional detail view taken on the line M in Fig. 3.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
A clip 15 secured on a wooden handle 16 a short distance from one end thereof is provided with laterally extending arms 17 between which a blade 18 of ieavy tool steel is mounted in an inclined position by means of a bolt 19, one end of said blade being also attached directly to the handle by means of a bolt 20. The outer end of the blade will thus be spaced from the handle by a wedgeshaped recess, and said outer end portion of the blade is beveled to produce a sharp edge 21, the beveled or inclined face being also provided with struck up teeth 22. The arms 17 may be provided with auxiliary apertures 28 for the passage of the bolt 19 in order that adjustment may be made to vary the width of the wedge-shaped recess 24: be-
tween the outer end of the blade and the adjacent portion of the handle. An auxiliary blade 25 is secured on the handle adjacent to the clip 15, said auxiliary blade consisting of a plate curved to the contour of the handle and having an out-turned sharp-edged flange 26 facing the edge of the blade 18.
In practice, the operator grasping the handle manipulates the device to introduce the stem of the grub that is to be extracted between the sharp-edged portion of the blade 18 and the proximate portion of the handle. By using the latter as a lever, the grub may now be loosened or partly extracted from the ground, after which by a twisting motion of the handle, the stem of the grub will be engaged by the flange 26 of the auxiliary blade which prevents slipping while the grub is being completely extracted.
This device which is simple in construction and quite inexpensive will be found thoroughly effective for the purposes for which it is provided. 7
Having thus describedthe invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A grubbing device comprising a handle, a blade secured thereon in an inclined position to produce a wedge-shaped recess between said blade and handle, and an auxiliary blade secured on the handle and having a flange portion facing the first mentioned blade.
2. A grubbing device comprising a handle, a clip secured thereon and having laterally extending arms, a blade secured between said arms in an inclined, position with respect to the handle, said blade having a beveled sharp-edged portion provided with struck-up teeth, and an auxiliary blade consisting of a plate secured on the handleand having a sharp-edged flange facing the edged portion of the first mentioned blade.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. 'SIDERS.
