E. WIDEEN.
CLOTHES DRIER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR-1.1918.
Patented Aug. 20, 1918.

EDWARD WIDEEN, or VANCOUVER, marrrsrr COLUMBIA, CANADA.
"cLorHEs nRrEra- To all whom it may concern:
Be it .known that I, EDWARD WIDEEN a subject of the King of Great Britain, an a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification. Q
My invention relates to improvements in clothes driers, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and useful means for supporting clothes to be dried and which, while being compact and of great convenience in places of limited accommodation, such as apartment houses, provides a maxlmumclothes drying capacity.
I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which A Figure 1 is a side close Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of my device sectional plan View taken on the line a,b of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device extended.
V Fig. 5 is-a detail ing rods.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
My device consists preferably of three tubular sections 1, 2 and 3,-te1escopicone view of a group. ofdrywithin the other, and of such length thatwhen extended its upper end is within easy reach of the user.
The lower section 1 is provided with a suitable weighted base 4 and with an inner tubular section 5 spaced from the outer section 1, this inner section 5 depending from the outer section head end covering plate or closure 6 and forming a tubular guide in which the intermediate section 2 is vertically slidable, the upper end of the section 5 being extended above the covering plate 6 an compressible by means of a divided band 7 passed therearound and adapted to be drawn together at its ends by a thumb screw 8 so that the section 2 may be held against vertical movement in any position to which it may be raised or lowered. The space between the wall of section 1 and the wall of section 5 is divided into four compartments by vertical partitions 9.
The intermediate section 2 which is, as stated, vertically slidable in the tubular guide 5, is also provided with an inner sec- Specificati'on of Letters Patent.
tion 10 spaced from outer section 2 and depending from Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
1 Application filed March 1, 1918. Serial No. 219,819. r
its-head end covering plate 11 to form a tubular guide for the upper section 3, the upper end of the guide being extended above the plate 11 and compresslble to hold; the section 3 n any adjusted position by meansof a divided'band 12 and thumb-screw 13, as already described with reference to band 7 and screw 8. The space between the wall of spective compartments, that is, there is one.
group of five rods in eachof the .four compartments of the lower section 1, or twenty rods in .all in the lower section; one group of five rods in each of the, three compartthe inner wall ofthe:
vsection 2 and the wall of section 10 is di-' I ments of the intermediate section 2, or fifteen rods in allin the intermediate section; and one group of three rods in each of the two compartments of the upper section 3, or
, six rods in 'all inthat section. The number of rods employed throughout may, however, be varied. -Each rod is eyed at-its lower end, and they are loosely connected, in groups as just described, by staple like members 18, to plates 19, as shown in Fig. 5 these plates being curved to conform to t e contour of their respective compartments and fitting loosely in the same so that they may be freely movable vertically therein, as shown in Fig. 3. The covering or closureplates 6, 11, and 15 are provlded with suitable slots through which the rods 17 extend, and the upper ends of rods of the lower and intermediate sections are provided with knobs 20 while the upper ends of the upper section rods are formed substantially hook-shaped, as at 21, so that they may act as coat or hat-hangers when desired.
An umbrella clip 22, may be provided on the lower section 1, with a drawer 23 underneath to catch the drip from the umbrella held thereby.
Having thus indicated the various parts of my invention I will now describe briefly its operation.-
The device when closed is as shown in Fig. 1, and it may be used then in a limited fashion or it may be used When partly eX- tended but When its maximum capacity is required it is extended to its full height, as shown in Fig. 1, when all the drying rods may then be utilized, and in order to bring the rods from their normal vertical position to the horizontal position all that is necessary is to grasp tl ie knob on the endof one rod of a group and raise it as far as it Will come thus raising simultaneously all the rods in that group, When they may be allowed toflfa l l over to' the horizontal posi tio11-, bein g then supported horizontally by the bearing each rod has on the covering plates 6, 11 or 15-, as the case may be. v
The various groups of rods are returned to their normal positions Within tll'eir respective compartments by raising one member of a group from the horizontaland pressing dovvn on the plate 19 of that group, the descending plate drawing all the rods OOlTHeCted to it down until they assun'ie the vertical position,- as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have devised a si i'i'i ple, compact, and convenient clothes drier, having a maximumclothes d rying capacity coi'isidering' its adaptability to places of limited accommodation, in which the clothes-supporting rod-s are adjusted quickly and With great facility.
What I claim my invention is 1. A cl othes drier comprising a suitably supported column having inner and outer casings connected together by a closure memher at their upper ends, the space between said casings'being subdivided by vertical partition's and the said closure being provided sure member at their UPPPI'BIIClS, the said closure being provided ivlth a plurality of spaced openings, an in-teri'nediate column vertlcally ad1llSt2Lbl'6'jfil1 the said inner casing and also consisting of lnner' and outer casi n'gs connected together by an upper closure member having a-plural'ity ocfi spaced openings, an upper 0011mm x' erticall ly adjustable in the inner casing of the intermediate column closed at its upper end and having a pin "ality of spaced openings in the closure,
a plurality of \v'ithdrawable arms normally arranged to hang Within each column having their upper ends extended through said openings and enlarged so as to be supported from the res ecti ve' closure members means" on the lower ends of said arms for preventing their disengagement from their respective column when withdrawn to assume a horizontal position, and in'eansfor securing the" intermediate and upper columns in any" vertically adjusted position.
Dated at Vancouver, B. 0., this 16th day of February, 1918.
