Description

` l Lucius PAIGE. oEoAvENDIsH, VERMONT.
y coMBINED TABLE AND WRITINGQDESK.
speificatioii of Lettersratem No. 12,765, dated Aprii 24., i855.
Beit knownnthat SI, `Lucius, PIGE, of
Cavendish, in the `county of Windsor and` State of` Vermont, have invented a new and useful` Secretary, Table, or Article of Furniture which Scanl beonverted into la lFable orWriting-Secretary "atPleasure; and I do p hereby declarelthat the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and "the :accompanying drawings, letters, `1igures",an"d references thereof.
Of the said drawingsFigure 1, denotes a top` view of thesaid article of furniture whenits partsgare folded together so as to "reduce them to the form of a table. Fig. 2,
isa front elevation and Fig. l3) is a central verticaland transverse section of it under such,circumstances.` Fig. Il, is an underside Nview of it. Fig. 5,1s a vertical and transverse `section ofwit` taken throughtwo of its end `posts or legs. Fig.` 6,` is a front elevation of it asit appearswhenunfoldedor extended into the shape of or so as to be used asa writingsecretary" or desk.` Fig. 7, is
an end view, and Fig.` 8, is a vertical and centralsection "of, it under such `circumstances. p f-` f y 1 AIn carrying out my"` invention I construct i i a table A, having a recess B formed down y ao;` l i C, which is so liuingedto the top board of the in it for the reception" of a rectangular boX,
f .tableby hingesas seen at, a, a, as to be capable of being turned from out the recess and"from`a horizont-al1 into an upright posi` tion.` Fig. 3, showsythev box, C,;entir'ely within its recess,{B',` which should be constructed so as to receive the box` and allow y its upper surface to be flush or even with the top of thetablel Thisbox is provided i on both opposite sides with doorslas seen at b, 5f, and o, c. `Within vthe box` or case I `place a reversible `paper rack, E, which is to be so applied to the `box `as to be" capable of being turned on centers or journals arranged at the middle `parts of two opposite sides of it, being as seen at CZ, CZ, in'Fig. 9,
which is` a vertical section ofl the paper- "rack `and its case, it being taken through the said journals.` Thevpaper is so applied to its `case as to `enable it to be reversed or` turned around withinl the saine to the eX- tent such as will bring the papers, or the openings of the recesses of the rack directly papers either when the case, C, is horizontal or folded int-o its recess, B, or when it is set up in a vertical position. Within the said recess, B, is a sliding board or desk, H, which is either slid into inclined or horizontal grooves formed in the two opposite ,-those of the other side 4 to it and the table; such bolts are represented at z', 2'-, in Fig. l, by dotted lines. @ne of them is seen in Fig. 7.
In order that the table may be either raised or lowered so as to enable a person to adjust the desk to such an elevation as may be most convenient to him each of its legsis made tubular andprovided with. a sliding leg, 7c, which `is applied to it so as to be capable of moving longitudinally into it. Such sliding leg has a rack of teeth, Z, affixed on its inner side, the saine being eX- hibited in Fig. 5.
Into the four racks four geers, m, n, 0, p, respectively work; two Iof them, viz, m, n,
or o', p, at each end of the tube being made to engage with `each other.
carries a crank, s, to which a curved catch pawl or rack, t, is applied so as to hold the `crank at any desirable elevation. By turning the said crank in one direction we elevate the table. Turning it in the opposite direction will effecta depression of the same. An. article of furniture thus constructed `will often be found very convenient.
What I claim is;
l. The combination of the desk recess B, `and the hinged boX or case, C, with the table so as to operate therewith as specified.
2. `I valso claiinthe combination -of a 'reversible paper rack with thehinged boX or case provided with two sets of doors on its opposite sides as speciliedand adapted to a ltable so as to fold into and out of the same in manner as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature this thirtieth day of Septem-- ber A. D. 1854. y
