WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
Application filed March 2, 1917. Serial No. 152,063.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURROUGH P. Moore, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Petersburg, in the county of Pinellas and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and especially to that class of wrenches commonly known as monkey wrenches.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the above class which will permit of a quick adjustment of the movable jaw and when so adjusted the said jaw will be positively locked against movement in either direction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench having a movable aw capable of being adjusted with the hand holding the wrench, leaving the other hand free for other purposes.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this class wherein the movable jaw is interchangeable, permitting the use of the wrench either as a monkey wrench or pipe wrench.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which;
' Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same showing a movable jaw in its locked position in full lines, and illustrating the manner of removably securing the handle to the shank;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line with the pivot by means of which the dog is secured to the movable jaw; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the interchangeable jaw for use when the wrench is employed as a pipe Wrench.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the numeral 1 denotes the shank of the wrench which is rectangular in cross section and has formed or secured upon its end a stationary jaw 2, this jaw being of the usual form. Upon the opposite end of the shank there is provided a reduced rounded section 3 having formed thereon threads 4, by means of which the handle 5 may be removably secured.
The movable jaw 6 of the wrench is formed with a sleeve 7 having therein a rectangular opening 8, of a size to have a sliding fit upon the shank 1. Formed in one side of the movable jaw is a slot 9, within which is adapted to operate a dog 10, the said dog being eccentrically pivoted as at 11 in ears 12 formed on the movable jaw. The dog 10 is formed with teeth 13 adapted for engagement with a rack 14 formed upon the side of the shank 1, the said teeth engaging the shank only when the dog is in its closed position, that is, when the finger piece 15 of the said dog is moved inwardly and abuts against the side of the sleeve 7. The surface upon which the teeth 13 of the dog are formed is rounded, and by reason of the lo cation of the pivot 11 with respect to this surface, provides a substantially cam rack engagement between the dog and the shank when the said teeth engage the rack 14:, it being necessary to insert a slight lifting force upon the underside of the finger piece to disengage the dog for the purpose of adjusting the movable jaw. It will thus be seen that the movable jaw may be quickly and positively locked in any desired position upon the shank 1, against movement in either direction and it is necessary to purposely raise the free end of the dog in order to permit any movement of the jaw.
In order to adapt the wrench for use upon pipes, there is provided an interchangeable jaw 16 formed with an arcuate serrated clepression 17 for the purpose of gripping the pipe. The other features of this jaw are substantially the same as those of the one previously described. When it is desired to substitute the jaw 16 for the jaw 6 it is only necessary to remove the handle to permit of the removal of the jaw 6, when the jaw 16 may be substituted, and the handle again positioned.
From the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the invention provides a simple, strong and durable wrench capable of quick and positive adjustment, and one that may be used either as a monkey wrench or a pipe wrench.
Having described the invention what I claim is;
A Wrench comprising a shank, a stationary jaw carried thereby, a rack formed on Said shank, a jaw slidably mounted. on the shank, said jaw being fornled With an opem ing, spaced ears formed on said jaw upon each side and adjacent-pile end of said opening, a lever eceentiically pivotaiiy mounted at one end thereof between said ears and having a curved head forming a cam, and
