P. BILLY. HAIR CUTTING SCISSORS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 9. 19H. RENEWED AUG- 22. 19l8- 1,294,998.- Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
FIG.1.

PETER BILLY, or AUBURN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF T FERIDYN'AND LUZANSKI, or AUBURN, NEW YORK.
HAIR-CUTTING SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed July 9, 1917, Serial No. 179,375. Renewed August 22, 1918. Serial No. 251,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pn'rnn BILLY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Scissors, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair cutting scissors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of scissors or shears arranged especially for cutting or trimming hair the arrangement being such as to hold the hair during the cutting operation and to automatically release the severed locks subse quent thereto.
A further object of the device is to provide the cutting blades of scissors with a ready means for gathering and holding the hair for cutting the same and clearing it from the hair which has been cut at the completion of the operation.
A still further object of the device is the provision of an attachment for hair cutting scissors that facilitates the hair trimming operation without rendering the blades useless for other cutting purposes, the attachment being easy and inexpensive to manufacture as well as to install upon either new or old scissors.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevational view of a pair of scissors provided with the present device,
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof in their closed position,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line IIIII1 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the scissors in their closed position,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end por. tion of the comb employed with the device,
Fig. 6 is aperspective view of one of the springs,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the blades, and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cleaning w1re employed detached and broken away.
It will be understood that the present device is adaptable for any form of scissors or shears employed in cutting hair, such for 1nstance as those used by barbers, the same being herein illustrated as a pair of scissors 10 having the cooperating cutting blades 11 and 12 ,pivotally connected together at 13 and arranged with the usual handles and loops 14 and 15 respectively.
A comb 16 is shiftably arranged positioned longitudinally of the blade 11 by means of screws 17 projecting from the outer face of the blade and arranged through transverse slots 18 0f the comb with the comb teeth 19 projecting inwardly in advance of the cutting edge 20 of the said blade 11. A wire 21 provided with terminal loops 22 is secured upon the plate 11 adjacent the cutting edge 20 thereof and between the said blade and the comb 16 by means of holdfast devices positioned as at 23 through the loops 22 and attached to the blade.
Oppositely positioned angular springs 24: are secured to outwardly projecting ribs 25 rupon the plate 17 provided with arms 26 slightly arcuate in cross section resiliently bearing against the rear edge 27 0f the comb 16 normally maintaining the same projected at the limit of its movement forwardly of the blade edge 20. Hooked lugs 28 are carried by the blade 12 in spaced relations at the rear edge 29 thereof having a path of movement within the plane of the comb 16 during the cutting operation or closing of the scissors. The operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, the scissors being grasped in the usual manner by means of the handle loops 1 1 and 15 for closing the scissors bringing the cutting edges 20 and 30 of the blades 11 and 12 respectively in cutting contact with each other while the comb 16 readily gathers up the hair holding the same ready to be cut by the blades. When the hair is severed, the further closing of the blades 11 and 12 brings the ends 31 0f the lugs 28 into contact with the comb adjacent the opposite ends thereof as at 32 the said lugs overelying the wire 21 and the cutting edge 20 against the action of the if Copies of thi's patent may be obtained for springs 24. This movement of the comb 16 removes the severed hair therefrom by Wiping the comb over the wire 21, While the said wire further prevents any clogging of the comb by preventing hair from pass ing between the comb and the blade 11.
-Upon again releasing the lugs 28 from the comb 16, when the scissors are opened, the springs 24 automatically project the comb to its normal operative position A rubber coi' ering 33 may be provided for one of the handle members 14 for coming in'contact with the hand of the operator is found desirable and while the present form of the invention is believed to be prefer'able, minor changes may be made if desired Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
l/Vhat I claim as new is 1. -Hair cutting scissors comprising pivotedcutting blades, a comb carried by one of the blades and shiftable' transversely thereof, and shifting means for the comb carried by the opposite blade having a path of movement in the plane of said comb.
' 2.- Hair trimming scissors comprising pivoted blades with cutting inner edges, a comb longitudinally arranged upon the outer face of one of said blades, shiftable transversely of the blade and having its teethfprojecting forwardly of the cutting edge'thereof, means for normally maintaining-the comb in its projected position and means carried'by the other blade having a path of movement in the plane of the comb whereby the latter is retracted during the closing of the scissors.
3. Hair trimming scissors comprising pivoted blades with cutting inner edges, a comb longitudinally arranged upon the outer face of one of said blades, shiftable transversely of the blade and having its teeth projecting forwardly of the cutting edge thereof, means for normally maintaining the comb in its projected position, a wire secured to said blade adjacent the cutting edge thereof between the said comb and blade and hooked lugs projecting from the adjacent face of the other blade for retracting engagement with the said comb du'ring'the operative closing of the blades.
at. A device of the class described comprising pivoted blades having inner cutting edges, a Wire arranged upon one of said blades adjacent its cutting edge, a comb longitudinally positioned upon said blade in overlying contact with the said wire with the teeth of the comb projecting in advance of the cutting edge of said blade,
' pin and slot connections between the said comb and blade, projecting ribs carried by said blade, oppositely positioned springs secured to said ribs and in contact with the said comb when the device is assembled with the comb normally projected, hook-shaped lugs carried adjacent the rear edge ofthe other blade with the ends of said lugs provided with a path of ino'vement in the plane of the end portions of the comb whereby the comb is automatically retracted during the closing of the blades.
In testimony whereof I aflix' my signature.
