WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Application filed May zl, 1919. Serial No. 298,652.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES B. STRANG, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lindenwood, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact and efficient wrench wherein the jaw carrying head is adapted for arran ement in a plurality of positions in angular relation with the shank so as to adapt it for convenient use in the manipulation oi? bolts and nuts which are accessible only with difficulty by means of wrenches now in common use, and more specially to provide a convertible wrench which is capable of. performing functions which under the present practice require the use of a plurality of tools, and to this end the invention consists in a construction, combination and relation of parts hereinafter fully set forth, it being understood that changes in form, preparation and details may be re sorted to, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the principles involved.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side View of a wrench embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, a portion of the shank being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the head end of the wrench showing the oppositeside from that indicated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a plan or head end view.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the head locking dog.
Fig. 7 a similar view of the yoke 1ocking dog.
The wrench comprises essentially a shank or handle 10 upon which by means of a pivot 11, consisting of a screw bolt or its equivalent, a yoke 12 adaptedfor angular adjustment in a plane parallel with the shank, and a head 13 pivotally mounted as by means of a screw bolt 14 or its equivalent upon said yoke, for adjustment in a plane means of the adjustment of the yoke supp emented by that of the head, said adjustments being in planes perpendicular to each other, the arrangement of the jaws 15 of the head in any desired relation with the line and plane of the shank may be efiected.
In order that the yoke may be secured at the desired angular adjustment it is provided with a segmental rack 16 for engagement by a dog 17 yieldingly held in place by a spring 18, the stem 19 of said dog being extended to a point within convenient reach of a hand grasping the grip portion 20 of the shank, where it is provided with a head 21, so that the thumb and forefinger of the hand which grasps the shank may be used' in connection with said head 21 to disengage the dog 17 from the segment 16 to permit angular adjustment of the yoke.
Similarly the yoke is provided with a toothed segment 22 in operative relation with which is arranged a dog 23 carried by the head 13 and held in engagement by a spring 24-, said dog bein slotted as at 25 to straddlethe pivot 14 and having a head or thumb hold 26 for manual pressure to effect disengagement of the dog from the rack or segment so as to permit angular adjustment of the head. l
At the opposite end of the shank there may be arranged a fixed yoke head 27.
From the above description it will be obvious that with a single tool having but one adjustable head it is possible to lock the jaws in such relation to the shank as to meet practically every conceivable condidition of use, particularly as the range of movement of the head with reference to the yoke is through an angle approximating 360 degrees, and hence the necessity for the use of a plurality of angle wrenches where in the jaws are disposed in diiierent relations to the shank is avoided, with the added advantage that the jaws of the wrench here in described can be arranged in a plurality of intermediate positions between those of the standard wrenches to meet special conditions for which the fixed jaw wrenches are not adapted.
I claim 2- A wrench having a shank, a yoke pivotally mounted upon the shank for swinging movement in a plane parallel with the shank, said yoke being provided with a toothed segment, and the shank being pro vided with a spring actuated dog for engagement with the segment to look the yoke in its adjusted positions, a jaw 'carrying head pivotally mounted upon the yoke for swinging movement in a plane perpendicular to that of the yoke, said yoke and head being provided respectively with a toothed segment and a spring actuated dog for locking said head in its adjusted positions with reference to the yoke.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
CHARLES B. STRANG.
