A TTOH/VEYS fld WALTER LAMBERT, F YAKIMA., WASHINGTON.
DIGGEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Application led July 25, 1919. Serial No. 313,162.
To ff/ZZ to!) om it may concer/1t:
lie it l'noivn that I, Tamise LAMBERT, a eitizen of the United States, and a resident ot il'akima, in the county of Yakima and tritate ot llVashine'ton, have invented a new and improved Digger, of which the tolloiving is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and usetul imi'irovements in "diggers, and it per* tains more particularly to devices of" this ehoraeter especially adapted for digging holes ir tence posts, plants, ete.
liet lence is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like eharaeters et reference indieate eorrespomling parts in all the views, and .in Which- F 1,9. 2 is a sectional. view taken on the 11"" 2,2 o' Fig. 1;
llig. is a sectional View taken on the line Ii--l of Fig'. 1;
'Fig' is a detail vertieal seetional View taken at right angles to Fig. Si, on the line Pivotally secured to the depending lug` E),
by means ot a pin 12, are digging;` blades 11, and each ot said blades is provided. on its upper end with spaced lugs 1li, between each pair ot' which .is pivotally mounted a link lai.. The upper end of each ot these links 14 is pivotally Connected as at 15, toa collar 16, and s: id Collar 16 is rigidly secured to the lower end ot a sliding sleeve 17, by means `the ground by means ot' the handle 5.
of rivets or the like 18. The sleeve 17 is provided near its lower end with diametrically opposite slots 17 and passing through the handle and the tang 7, isa pin 16', the length of said pin being equal to the diameter of the sleeve and handle 5.
Interposed between the lower end of: the sliding sleeve 17 and the castingr 6, is a coil spring 19, the tension .of which serves to maintain the digging blades 11 in extended position, in which position they are shown in the drawings. i
The operation oit the device is as follows:
With the parts in the position shown in the drawings, the blades 11 are toreed into The sliding sleeve 17 is now moved longitudinally of ythe handle, and through the mei dium of the linksl 14, the blades 11 are closed, at the same time compressing the eoil spring; 19. lith the jaws in the elosed position, they are lifted trom the hole, after Which the sleei-*e is released and moved longitudinally of the handle 5, to open the jaws 11 and dump the dirt therein contained.
l-lavine: thus described the invention, what is Claimed is: v
,11 digger Comprising` a handle, a casting;` rigidly Carried by one end of said handle` a plurality ot' digging blades pivotally carried by said Casting', a sleeve slidably mounted on said handle and provided with diametrioally opposed elongated slots` a pin extending' transversely of said handle andhavingg` its ends operating` in said elongated slots, a plurality ot links varrled by said sliding sleeve and pivotally connected to said digging blades, and a springe; interposed between the free end ot the sliding;l sleeve and the eastine' `carried by the handle whereby the digging elements are normally maintained in parallel relation one with the other.
