HAND AND ARM PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1920. Serial No. 364,615.
To all whom it may concern I L 7 Be 1t known that I, EnNns'r H. WHITE, a
citizen of. the United States, residin at Oswego, in the county of C'swego and tate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand and Arm Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand and arm protectors and is primarily intended as a substitute for the glove, mit and other crude and inadequate devices heretofore employed by firemen and others who commonly handle heated articles or imple- 111611138. 7
This invention also provides a hand-protecting device that may be readily converted into an arm or sleeve protector, thereby affording means for constant and useful wear; the arm thereby serving as a keeping place for the hand protector where it may be conveniently and instantly located. Further objects of my invention are to provide an efficient'protecting device that can be manufactured at .a very small cost substantially built of material having good wearing qualities, worn on either hand or arm, and quickly converted from hand to arm protector, or vice versa-" Reference is made in the following description to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device employed as a hand protector;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device in position as an arm protector;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the upper layer of material separated from the other layers of the device; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device separated from the hand of the wearer.
Similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The body of my convertible hand and arm protector is preferably formed of two layers of material hereinafter termed lower and upper pieces 1617, respectively, and an intermediate reinforcing piece or pad 18, all of which layers or pieces are secured or stitched together in any suitable manner so as to form a strong and durable structure. The upper and lower layers 16-17 are preferably of the same size and shape, whereas through them. The
the intermediate pad 18 is smaller and located near the center of the body in order to effectually embracethe article being handled, such as the handle of a shovel, fire-' hook, flatiron, or the like.
Alace 4 is passed through reinforced openings or eyelets 25 in the upper layer 17 so as to form exposed loops 6, 9 and 11. The loop 6 is adapted to engage the back por-. tion 5 of the hand or the lower part of the wrist 7. The loops 9 may engage the thumb of either hand and the loop 11,.when in operative position, engages over the middle fin er 10.
s illustrated in Fig. 3, the lace 4 is preferably inserted through the layer 17 before the different layers are finally stitched together, and the ends of the lace are tied together, as at 24, so that the knot will be located in the interior of the body when the different layers are secured together.
The play allowed knot 24 between the openings 25 is sufiicient to allow the proper adjusting of the lace, though the relative size of the knot and the openings may be made such that'the knot may readily pass protector will also one of the interior secured in place, the
function properly if" parts 3 of the lace is adjustment of the thumb and finger loops being compensated by the wrist 'loop 6 which may be slightly larger than the wrist of the user without impairing the function of the device. The forms of my invention employing the adjustable lace are preferred as the loops 9 and 11 may be varied in size to snugly fit the thumb and finger of, hands of various sizes.
A fastening device such as a button 20 is secured to the upper layer 17 at one side thereof and preferably projects slightly above the surface of the layer 17 so as to furnish a hold that may be used in adjusting the body of the protecting device about an arm. When the body of the protecting device is in proper position on an arm of the wearer, the lace or that portion thereof comprised by one of the loops 9 is twisted around the button in drawing up the slack, if any, in the lace. The protecting device is applied to the hand of the wearer in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, the hand being inserted through the loop 6, the thumb through one of the loops 9, depending upon Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
ger'through the loop 11. lnxthissposition, the body of the device may be conveniently manipulated to firmly.v grasp the article or implement that it is desired 'to'handle.
In order to convert the protector into an which-hand isemployed, and.theiniddle-fin- V diate layer secured through one ply and forming exposed wrist arm protector or position it so that it may be'readily found for future use the thumb and finger are released from their respective theiwrist loop.
