DANIEL GEORGE, OF NAZARETH, PENNSYLVANIA.
WIND-REGULATOR FOR ORGAN-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent 1\T o. 13,642, datecl October 9, 1855.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL GEORGE, o' Nazareth, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Method of Regulating the lVind in Organ-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figures 1, and 2, are sections at right angles to each other of an organ pipe With my improved wind regulator attached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The invention consists in constructing the lower part ot' each pipe of an organ with a transverse seat to receive a plug with passages in it resembling a faucet. By turning this plug the passage for the wind is enlarged or contracted and thus the tone of the pipe regulated.
A, is an organ pipe constructed in the common way with the exception of its being :t'ormed with a neck a, at the bottom which may be rather smaller than the pipe. This plug has two passages c, c, on opposite sides of it. The plug may be of Wood or metal but I should always make it of hard Wood as it is cheaper and equally as good or better. The neck of the pipe should also preferably be made of Wood.
One of the advantages of this regulator is that there is no necessity of laying out the canal which leads from the wind receiver to the pipes, to a correct scale, as there is in organs as at present constructed. The size of the canal is immaterial provided it be large enough, as for instnace the smallest sized pipes might be set on the largest canals and their tone could be regulated.
By the use of this regulator any pipe can be tuned at pleasure Conveniently and correctly. All the pipes can be made by this means equally loud. The regulator admits of the pipes being tunecl half a note higher or lower.
hat I claim as my nvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Constructing the lower part of each or any of the pipes of an organ with a trans- Verse seat fitted With a plug b, like that ot' a faucet having a suitable passage or passages the area of which is regulated by turning the plug, for the purpose of regulatng the tone of the tube and tuning the instrument substantially as herein described.
