Be it known that I, LOUIS G. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Caps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a protective cap for protecting the wearer from falling objects, such as red hot rivets, which often fall from iron structures while bein built.

My invention is il ustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and the appendedclaims.

In the drawing 1 indicates a skull cap or lining, which includes a sweat band 2, a longitudinal band 3 secured at its ends to the frontl and rear of said sweat band, a transverse-band 4 secured at its ends to the sides of said band and a shade 5 depending from the lower front edge of the sweat band. A crown 6 ts over the skull cap 1, the lower edge thereof coinciding with the lower edge of the sweat band and is suitably secured thereto, as for example, by rivets 7 clenched in the sweat band 1. The crown is preferably made of light, stron non-fragile, noncombustible, Aheat and eIectrical insulating fibrous material. 0

The cap has a detachable shield 10, for protecting the back of the head and neck of the wearer. Said shield is preferably made in a plurality of overlapping sections 11, 12 and 13 which are connected together by cords 14 near their upper edges so that they may telescope or collapse to allow the wearer of the cap to bend his head backward. Hooks l5 secured to the forward upper ends of the shield section 11 engage holes 16 in the sweat band and crown of the hat and detachably secure the rear shield of the rear shield to the cap. The crown may, if desirable, be'

covered with cloth, leather or other material 17.

The bands 3 and 4 of the skull cap engage the top of the wearers head and hold the top of the crown above the head.

In case a red hot rivet or other object should fall on the crown 6, it would bounce ofi' and the pressure thereof would be distributed equally on the wearers head by the skull cap, thus preventing injury to the crown or the wearer of the cap. If the crown should engage a live electric wire it would protect the wearer against electric shock. The cap lits snug on the wearers head so that he could lie on his back or work in yany position without the hat tipping or blowing off. The cap is as light as an ordinary working hat and is neat in appearance. The cap will wear much longer than an ordinary hat. It may be scrubbed or washed with soap and kept clean. Being a non-conductor of heat and non-combustible it affords protection from the sun and is cool and affords protection against fire.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. A protective cap of the character described, comprising a head receiving frame consisting of a sweat band and crossed strips of resilient material having their ends secured to said sweat band, and a superposed protective crown member of rigid material having its edge portion contacting with and immovably secured to said sweat band, the portion of said crown above said sweat band being spaced from said frame.

2. A protective cap of the character described, comprising ahead receiving frame consisting of a sweat band and crossed strips of resilient material having their ends secured to said sweat band, and a superposed protective crown member of rigid material having its edges immovably secured to said sweat band, the portion of said crown above said sweat band being spaced from sald frame, a neck shield formed of a plurality of overlapping loosely connected plates detachably connected to said sweat band, and a vizor secu-red to the sweat band..4 l

3. A protective cap of the character described, comprising a head receiving skull frame of resilient material including a sweat band, and a non-combustible yandelectricinsulating substantially rigid crown overlying said frame and having 1ts edge conforming to the contour ofthe sweat band and secured thereto.
