UNITED STATES YUSKE MIYASAKI, OF MOKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOCKING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921.
Application filed April 14, 1920. Serial No. 373,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YUSKE MIYASAKI, a subject of Japan, residing at McKees Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
his invention relates to certain improvements in look mechanism and has relation more particularly to a mechanism especially designed and adapted for use in connection with the actuating rods or shifter rods embodied in the transmission of a motor driven vehicle, or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character which operates to hold the actuating rods or shifter shafts, when in neutral position against movement to prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle or the like;
It is another object of the invention to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character which is key actuated to either engage or disengage the actuator rods or shifter shafts.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two members one movable toward or from the other and which movement is accomplished by the rotation of the second member and wherein the first named member is provided with means to hold. the actuator rods or shifter shafts against movement when said rods or shifter shafts are in neutral position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved mechanism whereby certain important advantages are attained and the de vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely'claimed.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
igure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a locking mechanism constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in appliedposition; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a locking mechanism constructed in accordance w th another embodiment of my invention; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a locking mechanism constructed in accordance with a still further embodiment of my nvention; Fig. f is a vertical sectional view llustratlng a locking mechanism constructed in accordance with another embodiment of my invention; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional View illustratinga locking mechanism constructed in accordance with another modified form of my invention; Fig. 6 is a frag mentary horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of Fig. 5; and Flg. 7 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a locking mechanism constructed in accordance with a still further modified form of my invention.
As is particularly illustrated in Fig. 1, S
denotes the actuator rods or shifting shaft housing and in'which operate in a conven tional manner the actuator rods or shifting shafts R, the same being arranged, in a well known manner, substantially in parallelism and which are adapted to be separately operated, as is well known, by a shoulder lever. As the means for operating the rods or shafts S forms no particular part of my resent invention and being well known, it 1s not thought that a detailed description and illustration thereof is necessary.
Mounted upon'the housing S is a casing C provided in its bottom wall 1 with two spaced openings 2 which register with the threaded openings 3 provided in the adjacent or top wall 4 of the housing S.
Disposed through each pair of registering openings 2 and 3 and engaging the threads of the opening 3 is a bushing 5 provided at its outer end with an outstanding annular flange or head 6 which engages the inner face of the wall 1 of the casing C whereby the bushing 5 serves to maintain the casin C in applied position upon the housing S The central portion of the outer or top wall 7 of the casing C is provided with a relativly large circular opening 8, having its lower marginal portion defined by an inwardly directed flange 9. The opening 8 is also defined by an outstanding flange 10 of a length required by the occasions of practice.
Snugly fitting within the lower portion of the central opening defined by the flange 10 is a rotatable disk 11 having its lower portion 11 reduced in diameter to extend within the opening defined by the flange 9 and whereby a shoulder 12 is provided to rest on the flange 9 whereby the disk 11 is maintained against downward displacement and in a manner to permit its unobstructed rotation.
At its axial center, the disk 11 is provided with an opening l the wall of which being; provided with a female spiral groove 15 to receive the spiral thread 16 extending outwardly from the periphery of the cylindrical member 17. The lower or outer end portion of the member 17, at substantially its axial center, is provided with an outstanding lug- 18 through which is directed an elongated rod 19 extending beyond opposite sides of the member 17. The rod 19, after applied, is held against longitudinal movement through the instrumentality of the pins 20 disposed therethrough at opposite sides of the lug 1S and substantially in contact therewith.
Disposed through the bushings 5 are the plungers 21 having endwise movement therethrough and which, upon movement in one direction, are adapted to engage within the recesses 22 provided in the rods shafts B when said rods or shafts are in neutral position.- By this means. the rods or shafts R are locked against movement when in. neutral position and for the purpose of prevent ing the use of the vehicle, or the like, by unauthorized persons.
The extremities of the rod 19 engage within the openings 23 provided in the end portions of the plunger 21 within the casing C whereby said plungers 21 can be raised or lowered upon requisite endwise movement of the member 17 upon rotation of the disk 11.
The bushings 5, in a comparatively small space. provide sutiieient bearing area for the plungers and also increase the strength of the plulr ers at their lower or working extremities.
Arranged within the central opening; defined by the flange 10 and in threaded engagement with said flange is a bushing or plug 241 which is locked in applied position through the instrumentality of the pin 25 or its equivalent. The inner or inserted face of the bushing or plug 24 is provided at its axial center with a circular recess 26 into which extends a pin 27 projecting from the outer face of the disk 11 to one side of the bore 14 thereof.
The bushing 24 serves to prevent the disk 11 from lifting and mounted within said bushing 24 is a key actuated mechanism 28, of any preferred type, including a rotatable member 29 operable under: the influence of the key. The rotatable member 29 extends within the recess and said portion thereof is provided with a belt or rock arm 230. in Fig. 1 the plun rcrs 21 are shown, in locking engagement with the rods or shafts ll. For unlocking, the bolt or arm 30 is turned clockwise by means of a key until it engages the pin 27 and the requisite turning" motion is continued resulting in the pin 27 and the disk 11 moving with the bolt or arm Eh) and during, which i'i'iovcment. the member 17 will. move upwardly and lift the plunncrs 21 from within the rece XS 22 and thereby free the rods or shafts ll. 1 i actuation. In practioe, it is preferred that the requisite release of the rods or shafts ll be acconmlished upou substantially one complete revolution of the rotating member For locking, the op eration is reverse to that just set forth.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the mechanism is substantially the same as that set forth with respect to Fig. 1 except that the casing C is integral with the housing S and the plung'crs 21 operate diretly through the openings 31. suitably provided in the single wall 1 separating the housing S and the casing Q. As the remaining portions of the device as disclosed in li ig'. 2 are similar to Fig. 1, such parts are identified by the same reference characters.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 3, the disk 1]. at its axial center is provided with a dependingcylindrical member 17". having extending; outwardly from its periphery aspiral thread 32 which engages withina female spiral groove 33 provided in the internal. wall of a sleeve tlei. The sleeve 3d, at diametrically opposed points, is provided with the outstanding lugs 35 engaged within the openings 236 provided in the adjacent end portions oi? the plung'cls 21 The plungcrs 21 coact with the rods 1' shafts R in the same manner as has hereinbe'forc been described with respevt to the embodiment of my invention as disclosed in Fig. 1, and the disk 11" is rotated in the same manner and for which reason a further detailed description is believed to be unncces sary.
As illustrated in Fig. at of the :wcompanying drawings, the housing}; 8 is provided with a relatively large opening 37 through which is directed a trunnion 38 depending from the lower wall of the casing C. The periphery of the trunnion 38 is thrcmlcd to properly engage with the nut or reinforcing plate 39 arranged within the housing S and having substantially close contact with the adjacent face of said housing. The nut or plate 39 is held against rotation through the instrumentality of the screws elf) or the like disposed through the lower wall oi, the casing C at opposite sides of the trunnion 38, through the adjacent wall of the housing and through the nut or plate 39.
The lower portion of the trunnion 38 or that portion thereof within the housing S is provided at diametrically opposed points in its wall with the slots 41 through which are disposed the op osite end portions of a cross member 42. he end portions of this member 42 engage within the recesses 43 provided in the opposed side faces of the rods 01' shafts R, and which end portions of the cross member 42 engage therein when said shafts or rods R" are in neutral position.
The central portion of the cross member 42 is threaded or otherwise engaged with the lower end portion of a plunger 44 which is actuated in substantially the same manner as has hereinbefore been set forth with respect to the mechanism embodied in the preceding forms of my invention.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the cross member 42 is adapted for coaction with the recesses 43' provided in the opposed side faces of the actuator rods or shafts. The member 42' also is en.- gaged, when in a released position with re spect to the shafts or rods, within the vertically disposed holding grooves or slots 45 provided within the housing S". Threaded through the central portion of the member 42 is the lower end portion of a rod 44. The upper end portion of the rod 44 is provided with a circularhead or disk 46 resting upon a sleeve or bearing 47 anchored within. the casing C Extending upwardly from the disk or head 46 is a pin 27 with which coacts the bolt or rock arm 3O carried by the rotatable member 29* comprised in the key actuating mechanism and which pin 27 b and the bolt or rock arm 30 have relative contact or engagement for the same purpose as has hereinbefore been more particularly set forth with respect, to the pin 27 and the rock arm or bolt 30. Upon rotation of the rod 44 in one direction, the cross member 42 is raised out of operative engagement within the recesses 43' when. the actuator rods or shafts are in neutral.
In the form of invention illustrated in Fig. 7, the rod 44 is directly carried by the key actuated member 29. The lower portion of the rod 44 is in threaded engagement with the cross member 42* which coacts in the same manner as has hereinbefore been set forth with the recesses'43 in the actuator rods or shafts with the exception that the member 42 is in releasing position when moved downwardly below said rods or shafts and which downward movement is limited by a stop 48 threaded upon the lower end portion of the rod 44*. The member 48 is held against displacement by a pin 49 inserted through the rod 44 be low the member 48. The member 42 also extends through the diametrically opposed open end guide slots 50 provided in the walls of the sleeve or barrel 5i depending from the top wall 52 of the housing S and. which substantially defines the opening 52-3 aifording communication between the housing S and the casing C.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well. adapted for use by reason of the conmnicnce and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a fixed member, a shifter device movable relatively thereto and provided with a stop, a plunger carried. by the fixed member and held against rotation thereby, said. plunger cooperating with the stop of the shifter device for retaining said. shifter device in a set position, a rotatable element supported by the fixed member, a member operatively connected with the plunger and moving endwise upon rotation of the rotatable element and key actuating means for rotating the rotatable element.
