Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 115, 12211.
Application filed may 3, 1920. Serial No. 378,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR H. WISENANT, acitizen of the United States, residin at Colorado Springs, in the county of El aso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to instruments for filling containers with air or other as under pressure and testing the degree 0 pressure in said container. It is particularly designed for blowing up pneumatic'tires and gagtingthe pressure therein.
s purpose is to improve combined pressure gages and filling nozzles whereby the pressure in a container may be instantly determined, and, if insuflicient, air may be admitted to the container by manipulating one form of coupling 5.
instrumentality.
The invention comprises the novel means illustrated in the drawing, described in the following specification, and defined in the ap ended claims;
. n the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: 4
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved apparatus;
ig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally through the body but showing'the pressure ga e 1n full line; I
. ig. 3 is an end elevation viewed from the inlet side;
Fig. 4 is a view of a perforated-disk adapted to'open a tire valve when the device is in position for operating. The nozzle is composed of a body 1, which may be of cast brass or other suitable materlal, and has an air passage extend ng through it. Atthe inlet end'3 an air pipe or hose 4 may be cou led by any suitable e outlet ort 6 opens at right angles to the inlet 3. he air p assage maybe formed by coring or otherwise.
In line with the inlet the body is bored straight through from end to end. At the that may be air tight. From the valve seat 7 the bore extends nearly to the opposite end where another valve seat 7 is formed whlch is also oonical and ground air tight. From the seat 7 a smaller opening 8 opens to the exterior. Intersecting the said bore and extending from the air chamber .9'oposlte the outlet port 6 to the exterior of the ody is a transverse air passage 10. Into th s air passage is threaded an elbow 11 which connects to a pressure gage 12 of any suitable form. I prefer to use a gage of the ordinary steam gage type, as shown. This gage rests upon the flat surface 13 of the body 1. Normally resting on the" valve seat 7 is a nicalvalve head 14, tending to seat by pressure of incoming fluid. A spring 15, shown as a coiled spring, is placed between the valve and an abutment 16 (shown as a washer seated against the couplin 5) near the inlet end of the body, and ten s also to press the valve head 14 to its seat 7. The valve head 14 has a reduced stem 17 to permit air to pass freely past the stem into the orifice 18 which connects the inlet with the chamber 9 leading to the outlet. S aced from the valve head 14 by the stem 1 is a cylindrical piston 19 ground. to fit accurately t e bore and prevent the assage of air from one end to the. other. e cylindrical portion or piston 19 of the valve guides the valve head 14 truly and accurately toward and from the seat 7 in its movements. When the valve head 14 is on its seat the distant end of the piston 19 is at the edge of the passage l0'extending from the air chamber to the pressure gage exposing the openings of'said passage'lnto the bore. On the other side of the air passage to the pressure gage is a cylindrical valve head 20 having a conical portion adapted to rest on the conical seat 7 a near the end of the body. The valve head 20 has a stem 21 extending through the orifice 8 to the exterior and on its extremity is formed a push button. The said stem is surrounded by a coil spring 23, one endof which bears upon the body 1 and the other upon the ush button 22. The normal tendency of the said valve head 20 is therefore to the open position respecting the air conduit 10 from the air chamber 9 to the pressure gage 12 so that said air conduit is normally open from the pressure ga e to the air passage through the body 1. ach of the valve heads is provided with a screw driver slot whereby they may be readily ground to their seats in case of need.
Across the outlet port 6 of the valve body is seated a perforated disk 24 having a central projection 25. Outside of this disk is a thick rubber washer or gasket-26. The gasket 26 and disk 24 are held firmly against the body by a screw threaded thimble 27. The function of the projection 25 on the disk is to open a tire valve, such as is conventionally indicated at 28', and the function of the rubber gasket 26 is to make an air tight joint between said tire valve and the outlet port of the body 1, constitutingwhat I is sometimes designated a press-on coupllng.
When used, for example, in filling a tire with air, the hose 4, it will. be understood, is connected to a source of air under pressure or an air pump,-not shown. The instrument should then be seized by the hand and the press-on coupling applied to the tip of the tire valve after the cap has been removed, pressing down upon the body Lto cause the projection 25 on the disk 24 to open the tire valve. Thereupon air from the tire would fill the air passage and act upon the gage indicating the pressure of the air then in the tire. If the pressure is found to be insuflicient the thumb or finger pressing upon the push button of the-valve will first cut off the flow of air to the pressure gage and then open the inlet valve admitting air from the source of air under pressure into the air chamber and thence into the tire. The thumb being maintained in control of the push button and valve may be released at any time cuttingnofii the inflow of air to the tire and opening the gage to the pressure in the tire, whereby at any time the degree 7 of pressure may be-ascertained.
It will be seen that the described combined pressure gage and filler nozzle is compact and convenient, adapted to be manipulated by one hand, constantly under the con-.
trol of the thumb or finger whereby the exact amount of air to be admitted in order to bring the pressure to a desired amount may desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a combined fluid nozzle and pressure gage a body having a straight bore there-, through, a combined puppet valve and piston in said bore, a slide valve in said bore, a pressure gage, a bywayfrom the pressure gage passing through said bore between the piston and slide valve, whereby the slide valve after closing the byway engages and opens the puppet valve.
2. In a combined fluid nozzle and pressure gage, the combination of a body having a straight axis bore therethrough, a valve seat therein, a valve head normally seating thereon under inlet pressure and having a reduced stem in rear of the valve head, a branch passage connectingsaid bore with an outlet port, a second valve in said bore, a pressure gage, a conduit connecting said pressure gage with said branch passage, said conduit intersecting said borebetween said valves, a spring tending to press said second valve under manual control, the range of motion of said second valve in moving to closing position being such that it will open the inlet valve after it has passed the conduit connecting the pressure gage with the air passa e.
3. In a combined fluid nozzle and pressure gage, the combination of a body having a straight bore therethrough and a branched air passage communicating with saidbore and with an outlet at right angles to the inlet, an inlet valve seat in said bore, a valve adapted to seat thereon under inlet pressure, a piston stem on said valve guided by said bore and fitting air tight therein, a reduced portion between said piston stem and the valve head, a piston valve fitting said bore, a pressure gage, a conduit connecting the pressure gage with said branched passage and intersecting the bore between said piston stem and said piston valve, a spring on said piston valve tending to move it in a position toexpose said conduit, a push button connected to said piston valve, said piston valve being adapted to open the inlet valve when moved to close said. conduit.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
OSCAR H. WISENANT.
