KNOCKDOWN BOX.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TowNsnND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison,'in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a knock down box and may be applied to shipping cases and crates in general. The object of myV invention is to provide a shipping case inexpensive to make that can be quickly collapsed and set up and strong enough to carry heavy shipments and suitable to be used again and again for shipping purposes. I attain these results by aconstruction illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing in whichp `VFigure 1 is a top View.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 lis an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a topY view with the slotted fastener removed and retaining cleat indicated.
Fig. 5 is an end viewV of the top member on edge. e
Fig. 6 is a top view of slotted fastener for mounting on transverse bars of top and bottom members.
Fig. 7 is a side v1ew of fastener shown 1n Fig. 8 is an end view on edge of fastener shown in views 6 and 7.
Fig. 9 is a. front view of the same fastener made double and adapted for attachment to vertical sections of thebox.
Fig. 10 is a top view of double fastener shown in view 9. v
Fig. 11 is a top view in section of the end memberinwline A B Fig. 3 showing vertical grooves adapted to hold the' binding bolts.
Fig. 12 side elevation of box showing binding bolts from top to bottom in assembled box.
The same numbers refer to similar parts in theseveral views and descriptions in the singular number apply to a plurality of similar parts.
My invention consists of six separable members of which the top and bottom members are of similar construction. The opposite members of the sides are similar to each other, likewise the opposite end members are similar to each other.
Referringl to numbers indicating construction details number l designates the walls of the top and bottom members, 2 their Specification of Letters Patent. y

transverse reinforcing bars, 3 the open ended vertical slots in the ends of said bars, 4 the slotted fastener shown in Figs. '6,17 and 8^mounted in alinement with said vertical slots 3. The ends of the top and bottom wall members l are provided with' underside retaining cleats 5 to hold the end members in position when the box is set up. Each side wall 6 is provided with horizontal reinforcing bars 7 with groove 8 in alinement with slots 3. Each end wall 9 is pro vided with vertical reinforcing bars 1Q shouldered to receive the ends of bars 7. The outer edge of reinforcingY bar 10 is grooved from endfto end in alinement with vertical slot 3 and mounted fastener 4. The groove 12 in bar 10 is for mounting they binding bolt 13, when the box is set upand packed. The binding bolt 13 is provided with locking washers 14 adapted to lodge Vbehind the right angle flange 15 of the slotted fastener shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and to lock the threaded binding bolt 13 when the nuts 16 lmounted thereon is tightened on the locking washer 14. The flange 17 of the slotted fastener shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 is made to turn over the edges at right angles of the transverse. reinforcing bar 2, and attached thereto by suitable rivets.
The slotted fastener shown in Figs.V 9 ,and l() is essentially the same as shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8. The fastener shown in Fig. 9 is provided with ange 15v at each end and connected by continuous bar or other suitable means adapted for mounting inthe cut out 11 of vertical bar 10. The said ver- .tical fastener may' however be an open slotted flanged fastener at one end and closed slot at the other so that it will carry binding bolt 13 at one end and detach it from the other when the box is collapsed. In large size boxes binding bolt 13 may be a continuous rod from top to bottom of box.
The locking washer 14 may be a punched piece of metal to fit loosely on the binding bolts. and may be annular or rectangular in form and in thickness, equal or slightly exceed the height of iange 15 and be adapted to lodge behind it. In operation the binding bolts 13 are placed in the slots of the flanged fasteners mounted in alinement with tightened on the threaded binding bolt i3;
clamping the looking-Washer 14 behind the.v
fiangeV l5, thereby holding 4the binding bolt rigidly in position.l To collapse the, boxthefv nuts i6 are loosened enough to lift the lock-Y ingwvasher. lefabovefianges thereby releasing the 'binding bolts 13 from the slotted fasteners. The transversev reinforcing bars 2 are mounted Hush or over flush with the ends of VWall l and additional.reinforcing bars may be spaced1 :between the .end bars.V
Bar@ *isl made to extend beyond WallV l and #overlap 4the'ends Vof barslO andv '7. Bar 7 overlapping the shoulder of bar`10 at the ends and to extend beyond .the Wall ti'equal tothe distance of the thickness of Wall l.
' Theedges offivall Sthus -beeome'a support.-` ing ledge-for -the edges of Wall 'l and the horizontalfbars A7 a proteetioii':tothe edge of Wall 1.*-The horizontal bars 7 extend be# yondfA the ends .offivall (5f overlapping the vertical reinforcing barsl() Whereshould- I' ered-,said shoulder being a right angle cutout Copies 'of this patent-may vne obtained for equal to horizontal reinforcingbar in V'cross features a box easy .to make and use. and
adapted as a yshippingcontainer for heavy material requiring large, strong packingcases..V l. Y Y
What l claim and for which I desire Letters Patent is:
