J. 'c BAGLEY COMBINED SHOVEL, TORCH, AND MATCH HOLDER Filed Jain. 6, 1922 Patented Apr. 10, 1923.
JOSEPH C. BAGLEY, F BELOIT, ALABAMA.
application filed January 6, 1922. Serial No. 527,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jossrn C. BAGLEY, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Beloit,'in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shovel, Torch. and Match Holder, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a shoveh torch and matchholder.
An important object is to provide a shovel having a blade provided with a torch by means of which a fire may be quickly kindled.
Further, the invention aims to provide a torch wherein the wick of the same is supplied with oil or other fuel through the handle which constitutes a reservoir.
Further. the invention aims to provide a shovel having its handleprovided with a match receptacle so that when kindling a fire by means of the improved torch. the
' matches will be within convenientreach,
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved torch in use.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the same, parts being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a detail-sectional view through the blade of the torch.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodicombined ment of the invention the numeral 5 desighates a blade having a recessed portion between its longitudinal edges and arranged centrally thereoi for the reception of a flat.
rectangular wick 6 of any suitable material. The wick is supplied with ml by a passage 7 extended through the blade and having communication with the hollow shank 8 which in turn connects with a hollow handle 5) which constitutes a reservoir for the, reception of a suitable liquid fuel. A valve 10 is arranged in the rear portion of the shank 8 and is within convenient reach of the operatorso that the supply of fuel may be conveniently regulated.
The blade is provided with a pair of parallel guide flanges 12 on opposite sides of the Wick, the said flanges forming a means for guiding a closure plate 14: adapted to be extended over the wick for extinguishing thefiame and for. protecting the wick from contact with the ashes.
The rear portion of the handle 9 is open for the reception of a match container 14 having a spring actuated cover 15 which confines the matches within the container.
When it is desired to use the-combined shovel and torch it is merely necessary to position the same as illustrated in Figure 1, wherein a combined bail and supporting member 18 is shown in position for supporting the torch. The combinedbail and supportingmember 18 which is connected to the use, the device may be suspended by means of the bail 18 from a convenient hook;
1. The combination with a blade having a. recess and a passage communicating with said recess. of a shank connected to 'said blade and having communication with said passage a combined reservoir and handle connected to said shank, a valve interposed between said shank and reservoir, a. wick received in said recess. and a flame extinguishing plate slidable over said wick.
2. The combination with a blade having a recess and a passage communicating with said recess. of a shank connected to said blade and having communication with said passage. a. combined reservoir and handle connected to said shank, a valve interposed between said shank and reservoir, a Wick received in said recess, a flame extinguishing plate slidable over said wick, and a c0mbined bailer and supporting member connected to the rear portion of said handle and
