EASSW May 22, '1923.
E. ANDERSON LOCK Filad March 5. 1921 Patented May 22, 1923.
FA'EN" @FFME EDWARD ANDERSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSGNOR OF ONE-TENTI-I TO J. HARRY MOORNEAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
LOCK.
Application filed March 3, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD ANDERSON, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Denver'. in the county of Denver and the State of Colorado` have invented a new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification. *Y f The present invention is directed to improvements in locks, and more particularly to one of the pad-lock type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed in such manner that it will be practically impossible to pick the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock so constructed thatu the shackle thereof will be firmly locked, but readily released upon' inserting a.v key and exerting pressure thereon in a. direction longitudinally of the lock body.
Still another object of the invention is to produce a lock constructed in such manner that in the manufacture thereof diiferent combinations may be produced.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a. vertical central sectional View.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. y
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the key.
The lock comprises a body 1 having formed therein sockets 2 and 3, and in the former is slidably and pivotally engaged the arm 4 of the shackle 5, said arm having shoulders 6 formed therein. A transverse pin 7 is carried by the body and co-operates with the shoulders 6 to limit the sliding movement of the shackle arm. rllhe arm 8 of the shackle is adapted to slidably engage the socket 3 and has formed therein a notch 9, there being formed in the arm 4 a similar notch 10.
A rectangular recess 11 is formed in the body 1, and located therein are side wall plates 12, which support cross pins 13, two of which are employed, the purpose of which will appear later. I
Formed centrally in the body 1 is an elongated chamber 14, the upper end of which is closed by aplate 15 in which is formed a perforation 16 and a plurality of radially Sepial No. 449,505.
arranged holes 17, preferably four innumber. Slidably mounted in the perforation 17 is a rod 18, said rod having secured thereto in any suitable manner resilient prongs 19, corresponding innumber to the openings 17. The rod is further provided wit-h a transverse stop pin 20, the purpose of which will later appear. v
The upper end of the rod 18 extends into the recess 11, and has connected thereto a yoke 21, there being a coil spring 22 which has its lower end resting on the yoke While the upper end thereof engages the top 23 of the body 1. Fivotally connected to the pins 13 are bell crank levers 24, the inner arms 25 being pivotally connected to the yoke 21 by links 26, while the arms 27 thereof are adapted to engage, respectively, the notches 9 and 10 to hold the shackle 5 in its locked position, and at which time the spring 28 located in the socket 2 will be compressed.
Suitably secured in the chamber 14 is a guide 29, and in which the. key 30 slides. The key has a right-angle lip 31 in which is formed an opening 32 so fashioned as to slidably engage the rod 18 and Hex the prongs a c distance to aline the free ends thereof with the holes 17, the movement of the key being limited in one direction by the engagement 0f the lip 31 with the pin 20. rilhe lower end of the guide is alined with the key-hole As shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the shackle is in its locked position. To unlock the shackle the key 30 is directed into the body by the guide 29, the. rod 18 being engaged vin the opening 32, whereupon continued pressure upon the key will contact the prongs until the lip 32 has engaged the stop pin 20. ln this manner the prongs will be brought into direct alinement with the holes 1T in the plate 15 so that further pressure on the key will slide the rod 18 upwardly, thereby rocking the bell cranks 24 to cause the arms 27 thereof to disengage the notches 9 and 10, whereupon the shackle 5 will move upwardly under the action of the spring 28, and at which time the bell cranks 24 and shackle 5 will assume the positions as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 ofY the drawing. Thus the shackle can be swung to its open position. and at which time the arm 4 thereof serves a. pivot. It will be of course understood that the spring 22 will be compressed, and as the key is removed Patent I claim z 1. A lock comprising a body, a shackle yieldably engaged with the body, a'plate connected with the body and having a plul-v rality of holes therein, a bar slidably mounted in the body, a plurality of resilient prongs carried by the bar and normally out of aline# ment with said holes, bell ,cranks associated with theA body for lengaffging `the shackle to hold the same in its `locked position, and ar key adaptedto engage the prongs' to alinethe same with the holes and force the endsl thereof through the holes to rock the bell cranks, as and for the purpose set forth.
V2. A' lock comprising a body,fa shackle yieldably engaged therewith, a plate 'located in the body [and having a plurality of vholes formed therein, a barslidably mounted-inl the body and having one end extended through the plate, a plurality of resilient prongs carried by the bar and normally out of alinement withv said holes,a yoke carried by the extended end of the bar. bell cranks pivotally connectedwith the yoke and body vand engaged with the shackle 'to normally hold the same locked, land a key adapted to enga-ge the bar and prongs to flex the latter to aline the same with said holes when said keyl is forced into the body, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A lock of the class described comprising'a body, a shackle pivotally connected to the body, bell cranks pivotally mountedfin the body for engaging the lshackle tohold`- the Vsame locked, a ban-slfidably mounted jinthe body and having a plurality ofresili'entprongs fixed at one end thereto, a stop pin carried by the bar, aplate'located in the vbodyand having holes therein,'. and a-keyr adapted to enter the body 'andengage ,the
stoppin and-'flex the prongs to cause-the same to aline with said holes, the movement: ofthe bar lin one direction vcomp'ellilngv the bell cranks torock and release theA shackle',
as and `for thel purpose set forth.
Intesti'mony whereof Ihereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnessesy s f EDWARD ANDERSON.
