Description
STATES PATE FFTC.
JOSIAI-I ASHENF'ELDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MARBLE-SAWING- MACHINE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 14,995, dated June 3, `1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, J osIAH ASHENFELDER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Sawing Marble Parallelor at an Angle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which Figure l, is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation; and Fig. 3, an end view, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts by which the same are operated.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my machine by using the drums A, A, with their shafts B, B resting in the sliding flanged boxes C, to allow the drums to rise and fall freely in the slotted guides D. The drums with their connections to be raised and lowered by means of the cord or chain by which they arel suspended, being connected with the sliding boxes C, and passed around the grooved pulleys E, and wound on the drum F, which is operated by the thread Gr, on the driving shaft gearing into the toothed wheel II, which is secured to the drum F, by a spring and catch. The drums A, A, are connected by connecting rods M, which serve the double purpose of giving motion to the drum A, and as a stay against which to strain the saws. The saws I, are hung on chains J, which are secured to drum A, by the pins K, which are arranged at convenient distances apart on the drum A, and on the drum A', by being wound on the small shaft L, placed near the top of the drum, by which means the saws are strained. The connecting rods N, are used for the purpose of preventing undue pressure on the guides D, by straining the saws, so as to allow the drums and connections to rise and fall freely. The drums receive an oscillating motion in the ordinary manner, by cranks O, on the ends of shaft B, through the rods P, from the short cranks Q, on each end of the driving shaft R.
Fig. 4, is a view of the guides; the slots S, represent the manner in which the saws are guided.
The operation of the machine is as follows: 'Io raise the drums and saws it is merely necessary to turn the drum F, by a small crank which will wind around it the chains or cords by which they are operated. To saw parallel pieces, the saws are to be arranged in the slots S, parallel with each other at the required distance apart. To saw at an angle, it is necessary to close one end of the saws by adjusting the chain by which it is hung, on the pins K, on the drum A, and spread the other to suit the angle desired, and arrange the saws in the slots S, to suit.
From this it will be seen that several tapering pieces and also parallel slabs may be cut at the same time, according to the width of the machine and size of the blocks to be sawed, so there is no limit to the number of saws that can be used.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Operating the saws by means of pins K, and shaft L, attached to the drums A, A in combination with connecting rods M, M, and slotted guide bars S, S, when the above parts are constructed, arranged and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
J OSIAH ASHENFELDER.
