COVER FOR LOCKS. FILED MAY 3.1922.
ERNEST L. TEICH, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASQIG-NCR TO AMERICAN I'IARIDWAEE CORPORATIGN, CFHE'W BRITi-ll'lil, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
key-hole and plugs of locks of the pin tunibler type and has for its object to provide a novel and improved device ofthisrharacter. y
The several features of the inventio will be clearly understood from the following.
description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a front view of a lock of the pin tumbler type embodying the features the invention in their preferred form with the protective cover shown by fulllines in its closed position and by broken lines in open position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front view of a lock with a different form of face plate than that shown in F igs. 1 and 2 with the cover shown in open position; and
Fig. i is a side elevation, partly in section of a portion of the lock shown in Fig. 3.
The lock illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings is of the pin tumbler type having a lock case 2, a circular front face a, and a key operated plug 6 having a hey-hole 7, the forward end of the key plug being cylindrical and extending through an aperture in the lower portion of the front of the lock case, and the front face of the key plug being flush with the front face 4 of the lock case.
In order to protect the plug and key-hole I provide the lock with a cover 8 in the form of a plate of substantially the same diameterand size as the face l of the loci-z case and having a forwardly projecting fingerpiece 9; The cover 8 is pivotally mounted near its upper end on a pivot pin 10 that extends at right angles to the face through an aperture in the cover and into an aperture 12 in the casing the forward end portion of the wall of the aperture 12 being reduced in diameter to fit the pivot pin. The forward COVER FUR LOCKS.
Application filed May 3, 1922. Serial No. 558,179..
end of the pivot pin 10 is provided with a head 1% engaging the front face of the cover. he pivot pin and cover are urged rearwardly to press the cover against the face of the case when the cover is in closed positron by a spring 16 coiled about the pivot pin and interposed between a shoulder 18, on the inner wall of the aperture 12. and a head 20 formed on the rear end of the pin. The frontface of the casing is provided with an annular groove 22 near its edge, and the cover is provided with a corresponding rib 24 arranged to closely fit the groove when I the coveris inclosed position. The rib is so shaped that as the cover is swung from closed position it acts as a cam to raise the cover relatively to the face plate.
With this construction it will be apparent that'by means of the finger-piece 9 the cover 1" ay be easily swung upwardly to give access to the key-hole and downwardly into position to cover the key-hole and plug; that the spring 16 will firmly hold the cover in the position moved and will effectively prevent the cover from rattling when applied to a device or a machine such as automobile that is subject to vibration; that the joint formed by the rib 2- and groove 22 when the cover is closed will effectively prevent water, dust, oil or other foreign substance from working between the cover and face of the casing and into the key-hole or over the forward end of the key operated plug 6, and will cooperate with the spring 10h) hold the cover in position when closed; and that when the cover is in closed position it completely covers the face of the lock case so as to effectively protect the same.
The lock illustrated in Figs. 3 and l is of the type in which the front face of the lock case instead of being circular es in the loci: shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with parallel vertical edge portions 26. For this type of lock, the cover which shown at 28 may be made of the same size and contour as the face of the lock case, and the annular joint between the cover and case when the cover is closed is made large enough in diameter to surround the plug and be eccentric thereto and still leave a slight space between the joint and the vertical edge portions of the cover and face of the lock case and also space for the pivot pin outside of the sealing joint. As shown, the sealing joint consists of an annular groove 30 in the face of the lock case and an annular rib 32 on the cover. This is the preferred arrangement since the location of the groove in the face of the lock gives a better finish than if the positions of the groove and rib were reversed. The cover is also provided with a finger piece 9, pivot pin 10 and spring 12 as in the lock shown in Figs. 1 and 2. p
In both forms the groove is eccentric to both the axis of said plug and the axis of movementof the cover. The groove can thus be made of considerably larger diam eter than the plug without enlarging the normal face of the lock, and the cover when moved swings clear "of the plug.
What I claim is: i
1. In a lock of toe pin tumbler type comprising a lock case and a key operated plug having an exposed outer end, a pivoted cover mounted on said case to swing about anaxis perpendicular to the face of said loch, yielding means tending to move said cover axially toward said face, said lock case and said cover having one a groove and the other a corresponding coacting projection, both embracing the axis of said plug when said cover is closed the axis of movement of said cover being eccentric to the axes of said plug and groove.
2. In a lock of the pin tumbler type comprising a lock case and a key operated plug having an exposed outer end, a pivoted cover mounted on said case to swing about an axis perpendicular to the face of said lock, yielding means tending to move said cover axiallyv toward said face, said lock case having a groove surrounding the axis of said plug and said cover having a corresponding projection adapted to enter said groove when said cover is closed, the axis of movement ofsaid cover being eccentric to the axis of said plug and projection.
3. In a lock of the pin tumbler type comprising a lock case and a key operated plug having an exposed outer end, a pivoted cover mounted on said case to swing about an axis perpendicular to the face of said lock; yielding means tending to move said cover axially toward said face, said lock case and said cover havingone a circular groove and the other a corresponding coacting projection, both embracing the axis of said plug when said cover is closed, the axis of movement of said cover being eccentric to the axes of said plug and groove, said groove and project-lon eccentric to the axls of said plug.
