Description

Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MUFFLER.
Application filed December 12, 1923. Serial No. 680,227.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Ror REAsoN- OVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kemp, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mufflers, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mufilers for exhaust gases of internal c0mbustion engines, an object being to provide a mufller which will operate to muffle or reduce the sound of the exhaust of the engine and which is provided with means for rendering the muflier ineflective so that the sound of the explosions may be plainly and distinctly heard.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which is simple in construction, effective in operation and which may be easily regulated as desired.
With the above and other objects in view the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
The figure shown in the drawing is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
1 Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding .parts, the reference character 10 indicates a cylinder or drum which is provided at each end with a head 11, while located within this drum and spaced from the sides and ends of the latter is an inner .drum 12. Extending into one end of the drums 10 and 12 is an exhaust pipe. section which will be hereinafter referred to as the inlet pipe in that it admits the exhaust gases to the mufllerj This pipe is indicated at 13 and extends for an appreciable distance through the ends of the drums 10 and 12 so that its inner open end is spaced from the adjacent end of the inner drum. At the opposite ends of the drums there is provided an outlet pipe 14 which is aligned with the pipe 13 and like the said pipe 13 extends for an appreciable distance into the drum 12. The inner open end of the pipe 14 is preferably flared as shown at 15.
The inner drum 12 is provided with openings 16 which surround the pipe 13, while the opposite end of the drum 12 is provided with openings 17. I
Located within the inner drum 12 is a butterfly valve 18 whose stem, is provided with. an arm 19. 'This arm may have attached thereto a suitable rod or wire 20 whose outer end may be suitably arranged and positioned for convenient operation.
When the valve 18 is closed, exhaust gases entering the muffler through the pipe 13 will strike the valve and rebound, passing through the openings 16 into the space provided between the inner drum 12 and the outer drum 10 and will travel along this space to the opposite end of the drums and will enter the inner drum through the openings 17, passing out of the muffler through the pipe 14.
When the valve 18 is opened the exhaust gases will pass directly from the pipe 13 to the pipe 14.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim;
Having described the invention what is claimed is 7 l A mufl ler of the character described comprising inner and outer drums respectively, the inner drum being entirely spaced within the outer drum, an inlet pipe extending through one end of the drums and within the inner drum, said inner drumhaving a plurality of openings in its side walls around the inlet pipe and a flared outlet pipe extending through the oppositev ends of the drums, this end of the inner drum being apertured, and a butterfly valve movable within the inner drum.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
J. nor REASONOVER.
