DRILL BIT.
Application filed March 2, 1923. Serial No. 622,394.
To all whom it may cont-em:
Be it'known that I, MARTIN E. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Plano, in thecopnty of Collin and State of 6 Texas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Drill Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drill bits, more particularly to devices of this character employed'in drilling deep oil wells, artesian wells and the'like, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and'utility of devices of this character.
-Another. object of this invention is to rovide a device of this character .in w ich means are provided for adjusting the cutting elements as they are worn away to maintain the drilled" hole of a uniform size through- With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel-features of construction as hereinafter shown and described andthen specifically pointed out in the claim, and inthe drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of'the inventionr gigure 1 is a side elevation, and
provgd devices, the latter view being partly in section, g p Figure 3 is a bottom plan view; The improved device comprises a stock or .body 10 having a continuous longitudinal bore 11 and with one end bevelled in op-' posite directions at each side of a continuous transverse medial line 12, whereby flat bevelled faces 13 and 14 are formed each occupying one half of the diameter of the stock.
Formed in each of the bevelled faces 13 and 141 are a plurality. of threaded sockets 1 15 to receive binding screws 16 whereby cutting disks 17 are adjustably coupledto the v bevelled faces.
re 2 is a front view, of one of the im-- Initially the cutting will be coupled to the innermost sockets, and then as the look through which the drill is operating, the disks may be reground and then coupled to the outermost sockets, whereb the cutting edges of the reduced disks Wi 1 be maintained in position to cut substantially the same slzed holethroughout the whole length of the well.
Then again a drill bit is produced which may be qulckly changed to cut holes of two or more dlameters without structural change 1n the bit, merely changing the location of the holding bolts 16, as will be obvious.
The improved device is simple in construction, can .be made of any desiredsize and 1S comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The preferred embodiment of the inventlon is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specificatiombut it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of lts advantages.
disks are worn away by the action of the Having thus describedthe invention what isclaimed as new is:
