application( med .my 15,
The invention relatesy means for, vattaching together two metal parts. It especially relates to means for attachlngtogether two members in which one of them name plate or a plate containing other in.
signia b-ut is not limited vto s uch. use.
The object of the invention is to provide a ksimple form of attaching device by which the name plate vcan Abe readily connected with the shell. 4
` The invention will be more fully understood, from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearlyvdefined in the` claims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings: y v
Fig, 1 is a fragmentary view of the ,portion of the radiator shell having the name plate attached thereto embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation,'partly in section, showing a lfragmentary portion of they radiator shell in section Vand showing in full v lines the name plate with the attaching means in position about to be connected with v the radiator shell; l
Fig. 3 is a view of the same parts shown in Fig. 2, showing the name plate connected up with the radiator shell.
Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of thestrip of spring metal beforey it is bent to form the spring. e l
Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview showing the blank of Fig. 4 bent into form ready to be attached to the name plate. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of theplate with the spring attached thereto.
. Referring to the drawings there is shown at' 10 aportion of=a radiator shell havingI an opening 1.1, preferably circular surrounded by a ange 12 formedv by bending inthe metal immediately surrounding the said hole 11. At 13 is shown a name plate which is to be attached to the radiator shell. Preferably this is formed with a flat inner surface 14 which, when the parts are fitted i927. serial No; 205,993.
together, is adaptedto lie against the 4fiatsurface l'on the outer faceV of the radiator;
shell. v
Preferably also the radiator shell. is formed with adepre'ssion 16 4of suitable depth so that whenthe two Amembers `are connected together the name platev will fit snugly within said recess as shown in Fig. 2.
The securing device for uniting together. they name plate andthe radiator shellk isA shown at A. This securing deviceis pref'-` erably formedout of a` thin piece of s ring metal as shown in F ig.r 4, havingaboy or band portion 17 and anarm or ear 18 integral therewith and projecting laterally therefrom intermediate its ends as shoWninfy Fig.k 4. The `said body or band portion 17 is bent into semi-cylindrical or splitv ring shape as shown in Fig. 4, leaving a space 19 between the two ends.V C v y 4 The ear 18 isv bent into va plane at right angles to ythe plane ofthe band 17 as shown inF ig. 5, said ear 18' extending radially inward fromthe -edge 21'of the rin-g17 and forming an arm tobeattached to thename platel as will be hereinafter described. Preferably the faceyof the said ring member 17 flaresl outwardly from the'edge 21 with` which the ear 1 8 is connected after said device has `been bentinto .finalshape asshown The said arm 18is then attached iltothe K.
inner face ofthe namey plate, as shownin F igs;y 2 ,and 6 at a.. point which willbe at thea centre of .the ring. It may be fastened :in anysuitableway. One method is to solder. or to s ot weld it asshown .at 2O. Another c method) is to rivet the` two members lto" gether.V
Preferably theirimof the hole 11.' the f i radiator shell will be bevelled or rounded off as shown at v22 to form an` easy entrance l of the spring 17 into said hole.
The said spring 17 v,is entirely freefrom the name plate except at the single point 20` of attachmentofthe yarm by the welding or, lother means of detachment-employed so,l tha-tithe band is jfree to be .contractednto in-` sert it into the hole 11. 7
In attaching the name plate to the radiator shell the said spring will be compressed slightly to allow it to be inserted into the aperture 11 inthe radiator shell, the space between the two ends of the spring permit- FIJ ' from onefedge of said'vring intermediate its radially inward from one edge thereof subting such compression. Preferably said spring is offset from the face of the naine plate and is of sufficient width so that when Vit is forced home through the annular liange l2 the inner face of the name plate will lie Hush against the face of the radiator shell and the edge 23 will project somewhat be-A yond the edge 24 of the flange 12 aroundv the aperture 11 of the radiator shell as` f shown in Fig. 2.
- by the use of a suitable tool to pry it'out ask it is not positively locked to the shell.
VVhatI claim is 1 1..v In combination with one lmember to be attached to another member having an aperture therein, a transversely split ring of spring metalr having a space between itsy ends, anV arm vextending radially inward ends, vsaid arm being secured to said face member atV a: point substantially vco-axial ,with said spring, the outer periphery of said spring being normally of a slightly larger diameter than the inside diameter ofthe aperture in said second member n Y 2. In combination with one member to be attached to another member having .anaper -ture therein and an annular flange'projecting therefrom, a split tubular member of spring metal having a space between the adjacent edges of the split, an arm extending radially inward from one edge of said tubularA spring member and at'a plane at substantially right angles to the face of `said tubular'spring member, said arm being secured to said first member at a point sub` stantially co-axialr with said spring, the outer periphery of said springbeing. noi'- mallyof ya slightly larger diameter than the inside diameter of the tubular flange on said y f having a short open space between the ends .second member and adapted to be contracted in diameter when forced into said aperture. y y n 3. In'combination with one member to be attached to another member `having an aperturetherein, a semi-annular spring of flat metal bent into tubular form with an openv space' between its proximate edges and having integral therewith an arm extending stantially at right angles to the face of said .tubular portion, said arm being secured to said' first member at a point substantially spring. n
4. In combination with Aone member to be attachedy to another member` having an aperture therein, aA semi-annular spring of flat metal bent 'into tubular form with an open space between itsl proximate edges and having integral therewith an arm extending radially inward from one edge thereof subyco-axial with said tubular portionofthe stantially at right angles to the face'of said 5. In combination w1 p th one member to be attached 'toy another member having an. aperture therein, a semi-annular spring offlat metal bent intoftubular form with an open spacebetween its proximate edgesA and having integral therewith an arm extendingV- radially inward from one `edge thereof sub-A stantially at rightfai'igles to the face of said' tubular portion, said arm being secured to said firstinember at a pointsubstanti'ally co-axial with said tubular portion of thev spring, said tubular portion of the spring Haring outwardly toward the edge which is farther away from the member to which itis attached. Y n
6. In combination with anV insignia plate to be attached to the radiator Vshell of an automobile, an attaching means consisting of a semi-annular spring composed of a band of spring metal, the said spring having a short open space between the ends thereof andan arm projecting radially inward from one kedge of said spring, said arm being at tached to the insignia plate at a point sub-v stantially co-axial with said spring.y
7. In combination with an insignia plate to be `attached to the radiator shell of an automobile, an attaching means 'consisting` of a semi-annular spring( composed of a bandof flat springmetal, the said spring thereof andan arm projecting radially .in-
ward from one edge of'said` spring, said army being attached to the insignia plate at ak In testimony whereof I affix my signature'.
