Description

G. BEVILACQUA SAFETY GAS STOVE LOCK June 14,1927. 1,632,111
Filed Sept. 3, 1926 v Q g I I INVENTOR N gm gfiimfilaquw ATTORNEY Patented June 14, 1927.
UNITED STATES GIULIO IBEVIIiACQUA, F CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY GAS-STOVE LOCK.
Application filed September 3, 1926. SerialNo. 133,356.
This invention relates to safety appliances to gas stoves and more particularly to such as use a plurality of burners having their control cocks arranged in a row.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a guard detachably engaged over the several cock hand es to prevent them from being turned accidentally or inad vertently whereby the gas may be wasted and consequently dangerous results avoided.
A further feature is in theprovision of means for resiliently securing the guard in operative position or in removing the same from the gas stove header to permit turning the cocks when required for use.
Another purpose is to produce a channel shaped guard suited to embrace the cocks and which is capable of longitudinal adjustment in conformity with the size of the stove to which it is applied.
These and other, objects, such as ease of operation, cheapness in construction and general utility are accomplished by the novel and simple arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in whieh:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention showing its application.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken along the center of the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view thereof.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 2.
In the drawing the numeral 10 designates the front upper element of a conventional type of gas stove or range, such as is in'common use throughout localities where gas is obtainable.
In a plane below and in front of this element is a header 11 having a cap 12 at one end and an elbow 13 at the other leading to a gas supply, the header being provided with a plurality of gas cocks 14. their stems having handles or operating levers 15, disposed in register when the cocks are closed, these cocks controlling the pas sage of gas fromv the header to the several burners.
Such cocks, becoming loose by repeated use, are easily opened by contact with the clothing of people passing, as well as by the mischievous fingers of little children. thus turning on the gas to escape into the atmosphere causing not only waste but often a dangerous condition leading to explosion or asphyxiation, in any case being highly undesirable.
Many expedients have been devised to.
prevent such occurrences, but because of their expense, bulk, or unsightliness few have survived the test of public appreciation.
The present embodiment is believed to overcome the stated disadvantages and, due to its construction, is adapted for use on stoves of various sizes without change and besides is suited to be applied, in the form of an attachment, in an easy manner without the employment of a mechanic.
The device consists of a pair of arcuate or channel shaped sheet metal strips, respectively 16 and 17, the latter shorter element being slightly smaller in cross sectional area toslidably engage within the other.
The main section 16 has inturned outer edges 18 and is formed with upturned longitudinal edges 19 serving to materially stiffen and re-enforc'e the structure and also acting to produce guides for the longitudinal edges of the shorter section.
Secured in the guides 19 at the outer end of the main section are the ends of a downturned loop 20 having upwardly inclined,- rearwardly extending members 21 leading to an inreaching spring connecting bar 22 adapted to pass under the cap 12. the bar making contact with the underside of the header pipe and constituting a retaining hook.
On the outer end of the other section 17 is secured a plate in which is fastened a closed flat ring 24 having an eye 25 to engage one end of a coiled tension spring 26, the other end of which carries a ring 27.
This ring may be secured to one of the supports 28 of the header by a shackle lock 29 or fixed in any preferred manner to some stationary partof the stove.
Vhen the device is in use the channel guard is placed to cover all of the several cock lever handles, retaining them positively in a closed position; the guard obviously being released and raised when any of the burners are to be ignited.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simpledevice for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention may be made with out conflicting with the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for gas stoves comprising a channel shaped guard disposed over the cocks of the stove when they are in a closed position, said guard being composed of two mutually slidable sections, upturned headings 011 the lower edges of one of said sections to receive and guide the edges of the other section, hook engaging means at one end of said uard, said means bemg rigidly .held in the eadings, a spring at the opposite end of said guard, and means to engage the free end of the spring to a fixed part of the stove.
2. The combination with a gas stove having a header and a plurality of gas cocks fixed thereon, of a channel guard disposable over the lever handles of all of said cocks when extended in register, said guard having a head at its open end and at the edges thereof; a Wire hook fixed at one end of said guard within the edge beads to engage the header, a plate fixed in the other end of the guard, a coiled spring set in said plate, said spring having an eye, and means to lock said eye to the adjacent end of the header.
3. The combination with a gas stove having a header and a plurality of gas cocks fixed thereon, of a channel guard disposable over the lever handles of all of said cocks when in parallel with said header, said chan nel having telescopically slidable sections, the lower edges of one section being formed to present track-ways for the other, means at one end of said guard to engage the header, said end being open, resilient means at the closed opposite end of the guard to engage the header, and means to resiliently confine the same thereon.
4. The combination with a gas stove having a header and a plurality of gas cocks fixed thereon, of a sheet metal channel guard to enclose the handle levers whereby they are prevented from turning, said guard 'being composed of slidable sections engaged at their lower edges, reenforcements at the longitudinal edges of each section, rigid means for confining one end of the guard to said header, resilient means at the other end ot' the guard to engage said header and means for positively securing said resilient means to a fixed part of the stove.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 20th day of August, A. D. 1926.
