This invention relates to pocket cases for containing tobacco products such, for example, as cigarettes or cigars.

One object of this invention is to provide an improved device of the character described which is made of a strong rigid material which will prevent evaporation of the moisture in the tobacco.

Another object of the invention is the pro- 10 vision of an improved device of the nature set forth, comprising an integral body and a cover therefor,- forming a particularly neat and compact construction.

A further object of the invention is to furnish a pocket case of the type specified having a'body and a cover coact-ing in an improved manner.

Still another objectof the invention is to produce a pocket case for a tobacco product,

which is made of wood, is durable and light, can withstand any crushing strains to which it may be subjected in normal use, is of simplified construction and efiicient in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.

With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claim, and illustrated in the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

Generally described, the invention provides a flat pocket case for containing a tobacco product without the loss of its moisture. The case is adapted to hold cigarettes or cigars according to its construction. It is 1928. Serial No. 281,414.

preferably made of wood, and the same may be of a hard variety to permit it to be made of thin walls and yet to possess sufficient strength to prevent it from being crushed when carried about in the normal way in the owners pocket. The wooden material possesses the necessary impervious quality to the passage of moisture to render the device highly valuable. Due to the snug fitting engagement between the body and the cover of the case, the latter is substantially air tight. The body consists of a one piece memher having thin side walls and thick end walls. Between these walls is an opening for the reception ofthe tobacco product, which opening lies in a transverse plane. The cover is pivotally mounted at one end wall by a screw taking thereinto, so that the cover is movable along the plane aforesaid.

The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same is preferably made of wood, such, for example, as walnut, and includes a body 11 and a cover 12. These parts coact to form a flat casing which is of smooth and uniformly rounded exterior conformation at the corners thereof, and the like, to provide a particular- 1y neat case. The case may also be slightly curved transversely for comfort in carrying the same.

The body 12 forms a one-piece member which is interiorly hollowed out at 13 to receive the cigarettes 1a in side by side position lengthwise of the case. The interior 13 has an opening 15 which terminates in a plane 16 forming a smooth, flat end for the body. The

body includes the thin side walls 17, 18 and the comparatively thick end walls 19, 20. The cover 12 consists of a strip of wood, having a flat under surface to slidingly engage the surface 16 of the body and afford a uniform substantially air tight Contact. Pivotally engaging the cover with the body is a screw 21 which takes into an end wall 20 of'the body, while the head thereof lies in a recess 22 of the cover, which recess is closed by a wooden plug 23.

Due to the hardness of the wood, the screw will not loosen, and the cover will always be effective as aforesaid. To limit the movement of the cover in the closing position thereof, an upstanding undercut shoulder 24: may be formed on the body 11 at the wall 19 thereof. To engage the shoulder, the cover 12 is provided with an undercut 25 forming another shoulder 26. The said shoulders coact with each other along an inclined surface 27, permitting free opening and closing of the cover. Since the shoulder 24 is offset from the opening 15, the cover makes uniform closing contact with the body all around the said opening.

In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown a modification of the invention, wherein the body 28 is formed with an undercut shoulder 29, while the cover is made with a flat end 31 to contact said shoudler along an inclined plane. The said shoulder is rounded at the top thereof to form an even curvature with the cover 30.

In the modification aforesaid, the pivotal engagement means is modified to include with the screw 32 a split spring washer 33 lying between a pair of washers 34:. This permits the cover to snugly contact the body of the case with a resilient action to avoid any possibility of looseness due to wear. At the same time, the cover can be easily turned to open and close the case.

It is thus seen that I have provided a device which fulfills the several objects of the invention and is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

I claim:

A pocket case to contain a tobacco product and protect the same from drying, said case being made entirely of wood, and including a body and a cover, said cover being pivotally mounted on the body for simple swinging movement in a transverse plane at an end of the body to open and close the latter, the free end of the cover terminating in a single plane forming a bevel for the cover, said bevel be ing spaced from the adjacent edge of the body, the body having a shoulder at said edge extending from side to side of the body, said shoulder being undercut along a single plane to take over the bevel when the cover is closed, and to coincide with the plane of the bevel,

which plane lies at an angle with the tangent to the are formed by the end of the cover in turning about its pivot, constituting the shoulder a laterally acting stop for the cover in the lateral swinging movement thereof, the cover and the shoulder forming a uniform fiat wall for the case in the closed position of the same, said cover extending from one side of the body to the other side thereof to be antomatically retained closed and in engagement with said shoulder by pressure against the said sides in the pocket of the user.
