Description
March l, 1932. w. M. THoMPsoN 1,848,033
CAN OPENER Filed Feb. 5. 1931 of the invention may be embodied in a can opener which will run around the periphery of the can dragging the knife through the metal. Moreover, the device may be modified as to other details without departing from the spirit of the invention andl I contemplate the exclusive use of all such variations as come within the scope of my claims.
I claim l. In a can opener, a stationary standard, a carriage slidably mounted thereon and comprising a flat body portion engaging said standard throughout the length of said body portion and having parallel anges extending outwardly from said portion and said standard,` a knife rigid with said oarriage, a cam positioned between said fianges and pivotally secured to said standard through a slot in said body portion, the bearing surface of said cam extending completely around the cam, and a handle projecting from a point on said cam spaced outwardly from the outer edges of said ianges to permit the complete revolution of said cam.
2. In a can opener, astationary standard7 a serrated feed wheel rotatably mounted in said standard on a stationary axis, a carriage slidably mounted on said standard and comprising a fiat body portion, abutting said standard, and outwardly extending end flanges, a cam-'pivoted to said standard and engaging both of said flanges forraising and lowering said carriage, a handle for operating said cam, said handle being revolvable past said flanges to permit maximum adjustment of said carriage, a knife rigid with said Carriage, means for rotating said cam to cause said knife to pierce the top of a can held against said wheel orto withdraw said knife therefrom, and means forV rotating said wheel to cause relative movement bef tween said knife and the can.
3. In alcan opener, a standard, a carriage member and a feed wheel member thereon, said carriage member being slidable along said standard towards and away from said wheel member and said members being adapted to grip the rim of a can between them, a knife rigid with said carriage member, said carriage member having spaced outwardly extending flanges, a cam positioned between said flanges and pivotally secured to said standard, and a handle pro- )eating from a point on said cam spaced outwardly from the edges of said flanges, said handle being revolvable past at least one of said flanges to permit maximum adjustment of said carriage member and said knife.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature this 6th dag7 `of- February, 1931.
, WILLIS M. THOMPSON.
