As a consequence it `will be appreciated that as the handle isgripped and the thumb o'r finger-piece 22 is depressed, the member 23 will be moved-downwardly against the in-v fluence'of the spring 29, thus actuating the arm 2,8, which will rotate the spindle 10, thus serving to actuate the lock or latch with which this member cooperates. l Y
In the forml of device shown in Figs. 3 to 5, the spindlelO has its inner end mounted in a bracket 30, the'arms of which mount between them a lever 31 extending through an opening in the plate 32 and which lever terminates ina thumb or finger-piece 33 and has an angular portion 34 bearing against an extension 35 riding within the plate opening and forming a part of an operating member 36. This member is normally pressed upwardly as, forexample, by a spring 37 and is retained properly disposed against the face of the plate as, forv example, by means of a nut 38 aixed to the inner end of the handle 13, which inner end, similarly to the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, projects through an opening in the plate and is preventedv rom coming intobinding engagement withthe member 36.V Interposed between the operating member and the nut is a spring plate 39 terminating in a pair of arms 40 underlying those portions of the bracket 30 'which' extend beyond the point of pivotal mounting of the lever 31, as a consequence of which the upper end of the bracket will al-` ways tend to swing inwardly towards theinner face of the plate 32, it being noted atthis time that a pair of lugs 41 extend between the arms ofthe bracket and the inner end of the lever and thus serve to retain the entire assemblage against displacement.
Y The pivotal mounting of the bracket and lever is, of course, eiiected bv, for example, a pin 42 and the spindle carries at its inner end an arm 43 ywhich rides within a transversely extending `slot 44 formed in the operating member 36.
It will be apparent that with the parts assembled in this manner a, depressing of the thumb or finger-actuator 33 will effectuate an oscillation of the spindle 10, the parts always being returned to normal position under the iniuence kof the spring. If, now, it is found that the spindle 10 be not of proper size, this ydirection to cause a withdrawal of the latch or bolt. Thus, a locksmit-h may find that, as set up, the spindle rocks in thefwronr direction. This ymay be quickly remedied lby sim? ply grasping they spindle and rocking the same downwardly to correspondingly move the bracket30 to a oint at which the arm 43 clears ythe slot 44. hereupon, by turning the spindle to a point at which the arm 43 extends into the opposite end portion of the slot, it will be obvious that if actuation of the tinger or thumb-piece is resorted to, the spindle will be rocked in an opposite direction.
F rom the foregoing it will be appreciated that, among others, the several objects of the invention are achieved. It will furthermore be understood that numerous changes in construction and rearrangement of the parts might be resorted to without departin from the spirit of the invention as defined `y the claims. i
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An actuating device including a plate, an operating member slidably mounted upon said plate, a lever rockingly connected to Vsaid plate, arotatable spindle also connected to said plate and means coupling said operating member to said lever and spindle to convert the rocking movements of the former into rotational'movements on the part of the latter.
2. Any actuating device including a plate, an loperating member slidably mounted upon said plate, a lever rockingly connected'to said plate, ak rotatable spindle also connected to said plate, means coupling said operating member to said lever and spindler to convert the rocking movements of the former intolrotational movements on the part of the latter and means for normally forcing said plate in one direction to return said lever and spindle to predetermined positions.
3.`An actuating device including a plate, an operating member slidably mounted upon said plate, a lever rockingly connected to said plate, a rotatable spindle also connected to said plate, means coupling said operating member to'said lever and spindle to convert the rocking movements of the former into rotational movements on the part of the latter and means carried by said platey and spaced from said operating member to confine the spindle also connected Vto saidA plate, an arm movements Vof the latterin a pathv adjacentr the plane of the plate.
4. An actuating device including a plate, an operating member slidable with respect to the same, a lever connected to said plate and bearing against said operating member, a

bracket rockingly secured to said plate, and means bearing against said bracket for maintaining said arm Within the area of the slot.
9. An actuating device including a plate,
