Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED HEALD, O-F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,615, dated December 25,1877; application filed I April 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED HEALD, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet Fabrics, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap carpet fabric, with patterns having a greater variety of color than usual in carpets of this class and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of my improved carpet fabric; and Figs. 2 and 3, exaggerate'd views, representing transverse and longitudinal sections, respectively, of my improved carpet fabric.
It may be stated in the outset that the principal feature of my invention is the combination in one web of carpet of both ingrain and damask fabrics, the in grain appearing on one face at the parts where the damask appears on the other face. weft-threads of the ingrain portion and the warp-threads of the damask portion contribute to form the pattern, so that a great variety of colors may be introduced into the latter.
In Figs. 2 and 3, A A represent the thick weft-threads, and a the fine warp-threads, of the ingrain portion of my improved carpet; and B the thick wefts, c the thin wefts, and b the figuring-warps, of the damask portion, the ingrain portion appearing on the face at By this means both the It will be observed that but one set of figuring-warp threads is used in connection with the damask portion of the fabric, instead of two sets, one on each side of the thick filling, as in ordinary damask fabrics; for in my improved carpet the ingrain portion forms one ply, and thus enables me to dispense with one of the usual damask figuring-warps.
In order to bind the two parts of the fabric firmly together, and impart homogeneity to the same, it is advisable, in most cases, to tie some of the warps of the ingrain portion-every third or fifth, for in.stanceto the fine wefts of the damask portion, as shown in the draw- 111g.
I claim as my invention A carpet in which are combined an ingrain fabric and a damask fabric, consisting of facewarps and thick and thin wefts, in such manner that the ingrain shall appear upon one face when the damask-ply appears on the other, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED HEALD.
