Description

Feb. 12, 1935. B. ROTHBLUM LADYS BATHING SUIT Filed Sept. 29, l933 Bery'am in INVENTOR Ratizb um TTORNEY Patented Feb. 12, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1,990,567 LADYS BATHING SUIT Benjamin Rothbluin, New York, N. Y. Application September 29, 1933, Serial No. 691,434 1 Claim. (01. 2-67) ment with improved means whereby it may be readily, rapidly, and conveniently converted to either expose substantially the entire back of the wearer to the invigorating and health imparting action of the sun's rays or to maintain the back of the wearer covered up for comfort, warmth, and protection.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter 'appear. a
The invention herein is an improvement upon the garment disclosed in my Patent No. 1,886,049, Nov. 1, 1932. p F
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a general perspective view of the bat 1 ing suit of this invention, showing the back thereof as it appears when in operative state or when covering up thebody.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the garment.
showing it as it appears when the back portion is in inoperative state or when exposing the back of the wearer.
Fig. 3 shows a front elevation of the garment.
Fig. 4 shows a fragmentary rear elevation of the waist portion of the bathing suit, in an enlarged scale.
The garment 1, made of any suitable material, comprises a waist portion 2 forming partof a usual body portion 3, and a chest portion 4. Said chest portion is configuratedto form a pair of portions 5, 6 that are normally strung over the shoulders of the wearer, as shown. The portion 5 broadens out into a sheet 7 of roughly triangular configuration that oovers the back of the wearer, one side of which sheet merges with the chest portion 4, another .side extendsalong the rear of the waist portion 2, and the third side extends diagonally from the shoulder to the oppositely situated side of the waist portion, whereat the sheet '7 is configurated into a belt portion 8, Fig. 4, that passes through a 'slit 9, Figs. 3,4, of the waist portion and extends toward the front of the waist portion. The shoulder portion 6 broadens out into a similar sheet 10 that covers the back of the wearer and overlaps the sheet 7, and is'provided with a similar belt portion 11 that passes through a'retaining loop 11a and extends to the front of the waist portion, whereat the two belt portions 8, 11 may be tied together as indicated in Fig. 3 to support the back portions '7, 10 in the position shown in Fig. 1. In the centre of therear of the waist portion 2, the back portion 10 is equipped at its lower edge with an element 120, of a hookless fastener means 12, while the edge 2a, Figs. 2, 4,
of the waist portion 2 is equipped with the corresponding cooperating element 12b of said fastener means, whereby the two elements may be operated in the well understood manner by the, 5 finger piece to secure the lower edge of the back portion 10 to the waist portion 2.
When it is desired to wear the garment with its back portions '7, 10 in operative condition for covering up the wearer's back, therefore, the said portions may be covered over the back by threading the belt 8 through the slit 9, lapping the portion 10 over the portion '7, threading the belt 11 7 through the loop 11a, tying the two belts 8, 11
together in front in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and finally securing the lower edge of the back portion 10 to the edge 2a of the waist portion 2 by manipulation of the finger piece 120 of the hookless fastener means 12, in the manner shown in Figs. 1. 4, thereby efiiciently supporting and retaining both back portions '7, 10 as indicated. When it is desired to convert the garment to expose the wearers back to the sun's rays, the belts 8, 11 may be untied, the belt 11 threaded out of the loop 11a, the finger-piece 12c manipulated to unfasten the lower edge of back portion 10 1 from the waist portion 2, and then the back porpresent positions.
It will be evident that by virtue of the fastening means 12 the external back-covering portion 10 is firmly and efliciently securedto the waist portion 2 along the entire length of the edge 2a,
Fig. 2, of the latter, so that the back portion practically appears as an integral part of the 40 general lower body portion 3, while the back portion and waist portion may be momentarily separated at said edge 2a for adjusting the garment to expose the wearer's back, as illustrated in Fig. 2. 45
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A garment including a chest portion and waist portion, said waist portion having a marginal edge, said chest portion having a pair of shoulder 50 support portions, one of said shoulder support portions forming into a part of a back portion and terminating in a securing means, the other of said shoulder support portions forming into a complementary part of a back portion that over- 56 laps said former part of back portion and terminates in a securing means, the lower edge of said complementary part of back portion and marginal edge of the said waist portion each carrying a cooperating element of a hookless fastener means wherewith to fasten said complementary part of back portion and waist portion to each other, said parts of back portions being both adapted to fold over forwardly toward the front of the wearer to expose their reverse sides and the wearers back, and said parts of back portions being held by their securing means while in a position to cover the wearers back and when in a position to expose the wearers back.
