ALBERT S. NEWBY, OF OHAMPAIGDL'ILLINOIS.
CENTER PIECE FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,809, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed May 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, resident at Champaign, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Center Pieces for Stoves 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
' Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top view of the parts disconnected. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support or leg, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the support in connection with the top, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the center plate in connection with the outer and inner attachments.
This invention has relation to the tops of cooking-stoves and ranges; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the slotted center and its adjoining adjustable plates engaging therewith.
It also consists in the combination, with the center and its slotted tongues, of the adjoining adjustable plates, having recesses and perforations for connection with said tongues, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the center plate proper, having the four concave sides a and the usual supportingledges formed thereon. From this center plate extend outward the depressed tongues b, which are provided each with a slot, 0, in the direction of its length. These depressed tongues are usually formed only on three of the projecting portions or corners of the center plate, while the fourth corner or projecting part is cast with an angular notch, cl, having a depressed supporting-ledge, as shown in the drawings.-
E designates one of the adjacent outer and shorter plates, which are designed to connect with the center plate, A, in filling the intermediatespace of the stove top, and completin g the circular bearin gs for the pots and lids.
Three of these are of the usual triangular form, having supporting-ledges on their concave sides 6; but between the ends of these concave sides a recess, 9, is formed to receive the tongues 71 of the center plate, and perforations it are provided. for the passage of a belt or rivet-stud designed to connect the outer plate to the center.
It will also be observed that a tongue, h,is formed on the outer plate, E,which is designed to extend over the root of the tongue I) of the center plate, so as to form a long and secure bearing. These plates may be adjusted with reference to each other through the medium of the slotted tongue-connections, so that the resulting combination or stove-top center will fit within reasonable limits stoves of various sizes.
K represents the separate outer plate or casting, having an angular end, 1, projecting from between its sides, and designed to rest on the V-shaped supporting-ledge of the center plate above described.
Usually it is desirable to support the main center plate, and for this purpose the hollow supporting post or leg N is employed. This consists of two concave sections, 8 and t, the former being provided with a slotted arm, 2, whereby it may be bolted to the center plate. The latter section, If, is slotted at m, and is adjustably connected to the section 8 by a bolt, T, which also passes through the slot m of the section 8 and is secured by a nut. The sections are joined at their edges o, which are serrated, so that they can be interlocked securely after the post has been adjusted to the required height. The hollow post thus formed is thoroughly ventilated, and, although of comparatively thin' material, will not be burned out by the action of the fire in the stove.
lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The perforated outer plates, E, and the center plate, A, having the slotted tongues I) for engagement with said perforated outer plates, substantially as specified.
2. The center plate, A, having the slotted tongues I), and the V-shaped ledge, in combination with the perforated outer plates, E, and In testimony that I claim. the above I have the plate K, having the angular end I, subhereunto subscribed inynanle in the presence stantially as specified. of two Witnesses.
3. The adjustable ventilated support N,e0n- ALBERT S. NEVVBY. 5 sisting of the sections 8 and t, connected by Vitnesses:
bolt, and having an attachment-arm, 2, on the ALEX. JOLLY,
former section, substantially as specified. GEO. L. MAXWELL.
