This invention relates to sliders for use on separable fastener stringers in coupling and uncoupling the same. 2 I The sides and one end wall of the aperture 20 are recessed to form s'ide shoulders 21 and an end shoulder 22, as clearly noted from a consideration of Figs. 1 and 3. The sides of the aperture 20 are further recessed or stepped to form other stop shoulders 23, note Fig. 3,
for checking outward yieldable movement of the plate or wall 18. The recessing of the plate or wall 18 to form the shoulders 21 and 22, as well as the shoulders 23, forms what might be termed a U-shaped pocket, in
which is disposed a U-shaped or yoke-shaped spring 24,
the crosshead 25 of the spring being arranged above and seating upon the shoulder 22; whereas the forward end 26 of the side members of the spring bear upon the shoulders 21 at the forward end portion of said pocket.
Between the end 26 and crosshead 25 the side members of the spring are bowed downwardly, as seen at 27, to bear upon the upper surface of the plate 17 substantially midway between the rivets 16. It will thus be apparent that theback plate or bottom wall 18 is normally supported upon the web, as seen at 28, and upon a forward reduced extension 29 of the bar 13. These two engagements check movement of the wall 18 in the directionof the wall 10. In other words, the wall 18 is maintained normally in the general slider arrangement for free movement of stringer scoops through the channels, of the slider in the operation of coupling and uncoupling the 'same. 'It will be apparent, however, that in the event of a jamming of part of a garment or other material between the stringer scoops and the slider walls, the wall 18 will yield against the action of the spring 24,,and this yielding movement of the wall 18 is checked by engagement of the shoulders 23 with the plate 17. Upon freeing the slider from its jammed condition and removal of the jamming element from the path of slider movement, the wall 18 will automatically return to its normal position and the slider will again be in proper condition for normal use on the stringers. V
While my improved structure is applicable to sliders of any type and kind, I have illustrated in Fig, 1 of the drawing a slider pull 30 of the spring pin lock type, the pull being pivoted in suitable bearings 31 on the wall 10 and having a projecting lock element 32 which operates in an aperture 33 in the wall 10. As this type of lock pull construction is old and known in the art, no further detailed description will be given. 7
It will also be noted from a consideration of Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing that the plate ,17 isflalso housed within the opening or aperture of the wall 18, soas to produce a substantially flush lower surface on the back plate or bottom wall of the slider, The plate 17 will fit snugly, but freely in the aperture 20 or the recessed portions of back plate 18. However, exaggerated clearance is shown in the accompanying drawing to illustrate this feature of the invention.
By reason of the construction of the slider body and wall 18, these two parts can be readily die cast and the complete slider structure quickly and easily assembled, it being apparent that, after the wall 18 is arranged upon the slider body, the spring 24 is placed in position, after which the plate 17 is arranged over the rivet studs 16, and the latter are then headed over while holding the plate firmly upon the bar 13 or the downwardly extending portion 15 thereof.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing, 34 illustrates part of the web of a slider, such as shown in Fig. 1, for example, in other words, similar to the web 12 and 35 represents an elongated bar member, or bottom part, similar to the part 13. To the member 35 is attached a retaining plate 36 held in position by rivet members 37. The bar 35 has, on its inner surface, a reinforcing extending leg or ridge 38, similar to the ridge 14. said slider comprising a one piece body defined'by a top wall, a web at one end portionof the :top wall, a barlike extension on said web, a bottom wall part movable relatively to said top wall, cooperating means on said bar extension and bottom wall part for limiting movement of p the bottomwall part with respect to said bar extension and top wall in; two;directions, said last named means including; apla'te fixed to said'bar extension, said bottom wall par t being apertured to. receive said bar extension and enveloping sa'idextension, said plate overlying parts of said bottomwall part .in checkingmovement of the bottom i wall part in one direction, said bottom wall part being recessed around'the bar .extension to form a' substantially U-shapedipockeu and a U-shaped spring arranged in. -said. pocket .and'ope'rativ'ely engaging the bottom wall part and said plate in' normally supporting the bottom said slider comprising a one piece body defined by a top."-- i extension on said web, a bottom wall part movable relatively to said top wall, cooperating means on said bar extension and bottom wall part for limiting movement of the bottom wall part with respect to said bar extension and top wall in two directions, said last named means including a plate fixed to said bar extension, said bottom wall part being apertured to receive said bar extension and enveloping said extension, said plate overlying parts of said bottom wall part in checking movement of the bottom wall part in one direction, said bottom wall part being recessed around the bar extension to form a substantially U-shaped pocket, a U-shaped spring arranged in said pocket and operatively engaging the bottom wall part and said plate in normally supporting the bottom wall part in operative position, and means integral with said web for reinforcing said bar extension.

A jam-freeing slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a one piece body defined by a top wall, a web at one end portion of the top wall, a barlike extension on said web, a bottom wall part movable relatively to said top wall, cooperating means on said bar extension and bottom wall part for limiting movement of the bottom wall part with respect to said bar extension and top wall in two directions, said last named means including a plate fixed to said bar extension, said web and bar extension having means checking movement of the bottomwall part in the direction of said top wall, and saidtop wall having means for pivotally coupling a pull therewith.

A jam-freeing slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a top wall having an integral web at one end, an elongated member integral with the web and arranged beneath and spaced from said top wall, said member having a downwardly directed elongated bar portion, a bottom wall part apertured to receive said member and bar portion and guided thereby in movement toward and from the top wall part, said bottom wall part being recessed around said bar portion to form a U- shaped pocket, plate means fixed to the bar portion and overlying said pocket to check movement of the bottom I wall part in a direction opposed to said top wall part,
and spring means arranged in said pocket and operatively engaging the bottom wall part and said plate means in normally supporting the bottom wall part in seated position upon said elongated member and web.

A jam-freeing slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a top wall having an integral web at one end, an elongated member integral with the web and arranged beneath and spaced from said top wall, said member'having a downwardly directed elongated bar portion, a bottom wall part apertured to receive said member and bar portion and guided thereby in movement toward and from the top wall part, said bottom wall part being recessed around said bar portion to form a U-shaped pocket, means fixed to the bar portion and overlying said pocket to check movement of the bottom wall part in a direction opposed to said top wall part, a U-shaped spring arranged in said pocket and operatively engaging the bottom wall part and said means in normally supporting the bottom wall part in seated position upon said elongated member and web, and said spring having bowed opposed sides.

A jam-freeing slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a top wall part having an integral web at one end, an'elongated member integral with the web and arranged beneath and spaced from said top wall part, said member having a downwardly directed elongated bar portion, a bottom wall part apertured to receive said member and bar portion and guided thereby in movement toward and from the top wall part, said 5 bottom wall part being recessed around said bar portion to form a U-shaped pocket, plate means fixed to the bar portion.andoverlying'said pocket to check movement of wall, a web at one end portion of the top wall, a barlike the bottom .wall part in a direction opposed to said top wall part, spring means arranged in said pocket and operatively engaging the bottom walljpart and said plate 'means in normally supporting the bottom wall' part in seated position upon said elongated member and .web, said spring means comprising a U-shaped spring having bowed opposedsides, said top wall partand bottom wall part having inwardly extending flanges which, in conjunction with said web, define the channel structure of the slider body, and means on the. top wall part'for pivotally coupling a pull therewith.

A jam-freeingsliderfor separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a top wall part having an integral web at one end, an elongatedmember integralwith the web and arranged beneath and spaced from said top wall part, said member having a downwardly directed elongated bar portion, a bottomwall. part apertured to receive said member and bar portion and guided thereby in movement toward and from the top wall part, said bottom wall part being recessed around said bar portion to form a U-shaped pocket, plate means fixed to the bar portion and overlying said pocket to check movement of the bottom wall part in a direction opposed to said top wall part, spring means arranged in said pocket and operatively engaging the bottom wall part and said plate means in normally supporting the bottom wall part in seated position upon said elongated member and web, said spring means comprising a U-shaped spring having bowed opposed sides, means on the top wall part for pivotally coupling a pull therewith, a pull pivoted to said last named means and having a lock element movable into and out of the channel of the slider body, and means integral with said web for reinforcing said elongated member.

A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising a body portion having a top member, a bottom member and a web joining said members at one end and integral therewith, said bottom member extending from the web to the opposite end of the slider and having a bar portion extending outwardly therefrom, said top member comprising a wall having means for attaching a pull thereto, a movable wall part associated with the bottom mem her, said wall part having substantially the same length and substantially the same outline shape as the top member, said wall part having a recess part for receiving the bottom member and bar portion, said bar portion being enclosed by the walls defining said recess, said wall part as a unit being movable away from and toward the top member, a retaining member for said wall part secured to the outer side of the bar portion and disposed in said recess, said retaining member being engageable by the wall part and acting to check movement of the wall part away from the top member, means on said body portion engageable with each end portion of the wall part for limiting movement of the wall part towards said top member, yieldable means engaging the wall part and retaining member at a plurality of spaced points adjacent opposite ends and opposite sides of said .bar portion and acting to bias the wall part towards said top member, inner and outer surfaces of said wall part :normally being substantially flush with the inner surface of the bottom member and the outer surface of the re- :taining member, respectively, said wall part being char- :acterized by the fact that a force exerted on any peripheral portion thereof in a direction away from the top member will move said wall part, said wall part and top member being adapted to receive therebetween and to make contact with the scoops of a pair of fastener stringers, and said slider, when jammed on the stringers by virtue of an obstruction coming between said scoops and the slider, being adapted to become free of the jam by virtue of the movability of the wall part.
9. A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising top member, a bottom member, and a web joining said members and integral therewith, said bottom member having a bar portion extending outwardly therefrom, a movable wall part associated with the bottom member,
. said ,walLhaving. a. recess for. receiving the .bottoni menaber and bar portion, a retaining member for said wall part secured to the outer side of the bar portion .and disposedin said recess, yieldable means engagingQthe wall part and retaining member at a plurality of spaced points adjacent opposite ends and opposite sides .of said bar portion and acting to bias the wall part towardssaid top member, inner and outer surfaces of said wall lpart normally being substantially flush with the innersurface of the bottom member and the outer surface of theretaining member, respectively,.s aid wall part being rockable about the central longitudinal axis thereof andpbeing further characterized by the fact that a force exerted on any peripheral portion thereof in a direction away from the top memberwill move said wall part1 10. A slider according to claim 9 in which said yieldable means comprises a pair of bowed spring members.
11. A slider according to claim 10 in which said spring members extend longitudinally of the slider.
12. A slider according to claim 11 in which said wall part has shoulders extending into said recess and in which said spring members are disposed on said shoulders.
13. A slider according to claim 12 in which said spring members are positioned at opposite sides of said bar portion.
14. A slider according to claim 10 in which said spring members extend transversely of the slider.
15 A slider according to claim 14 in which said spring members are disposed in transverse recesses opening through the outer side of said wall part.
16. A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising a top member, a bottom member and a web joining said members, a movable wall part associated with the bottom member, said wall part having a recess for receiving the bottom member, a retaining member for said wall part secured to the outer side of the bottom member and disposed in said recess, yieldable means engaging the wall part and retaining member at a plurality of spaced points and acting to bias the wall part towards said top member, said wall part being rockable about the central longitudinal axis thereof and being further characterized by the fact that a force exerted on any peripheral portion thereof in a direction away from the top member will move said well part.
17. A slider for slide fastener stringers comprising a pair of spaced members connected by a web at one end thereof, a flanged part associated with one of said members and spaced from the other member, said latter member being flanged, said space between said flanged part and said other member providing a guiding slot for a stringer, said one member extending to the end of the slider opposite the web end, means for movably mounting and resiliently maintaining said flanged part with respect to the associated member such that the part is movable in a direction to increase the width of said slot and is normally maintained in a position in which the slot width is less than the maximum possible width, the inner surface of said part being substantially flush with the inner surface of the associated member, thereby forming a composite inner surface, said composite inner surface and the inner surface of the said other member being adapted to receive therebetween and to make contact with the scoops of a pair of stringers, said flanged part being automatically movable to increase the width of said slot upon contact with an obstruction coming between the slider and the stringer scoops, said slider being capable of coupling and uncoupling said stringers when said slot width is at a maximum, and said flanged part and flanged other member helping to prevent the slider from being laterally removed from the stringers.

A slider for slide fastener stringers comprising a pair of members connected by a web at one end thereof, one of said members comprising an elongated bar, a flanged part associated with said one member and spaced from the other member, said flanged part having a recess for receiving said one member, said other member being flanged, said space between said flanged part and said other member providing a guiding slot for a stringer, said'one member extending to the end of the slider opposite the Web end, means for movably mounting and resiliently maintaining said flanged part with respect to the associated member such that the part is movable in a direction to increase the width of said slot and is normally maintained in a position in which'the slot'width is less than-the maximum possible width, the inner surface of said part being substantially flush with the inner surface of the associated member, thereby forming a composite inner surface, saidcomposite inner surface and the inner surface of the said other member being adapted to receive therebetween and to make contact with the scoops of a pair of stringers, said slider being capable of coupling and uncoupling said stringers When said slot width is at a maximum, and said flanged part. and flanged other member helping to prevent the. slider from being laterally removed 'from the stringers. j I
