Description

(No Model.) R. MOPPLY.
FOLDING SATGHEL Patented Apr. 154884.-
WITNESSES: g
IENTOR NITE STATES Arnivr' OFFICE.
FOLDING SATCHEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 296,993, dated April 15, 1884.
Application filed February 23, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT MOFFLY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Satchels, of which improvements the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved satchel closed. Fig. 2 is also a view in perspective, showing a plan of the blank with the interior flaps spread out; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a satchel closed, showing how the pamphlet beneath the several flaps is held therein.
The object of my invention is to provide a satchel made from a single piece of leather or other similar flexible material, whereby pamphlets, sheet music, 820., may be conveniently carried with an entire absence of bundling, rolling, and creasing, which, as is well known, has not heretoforebeen the effect produced by the ordinary folding satchel or portfolio for such purposes. For instance, take a sheet of music which has been rolled in one of the ordinary satchels in common use, and it is frequently found a difficulty task to again restore the sheet to its original shape and condition, to say nothing of the wear and tear and soiling of the paper arising from constant handling.
My invention has been specially desi ned with the view of obviating these objectionable features. It consists of a blank of leather or similar flexible material of any convenient size and form, having what I term a series of regulating-flaps on each side of the blank of the peculiar shape shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. It is important that these regulating interior flaps should be of the shape shown, in view of the flexible nature of the material of which the blank is made, and more particularly to obviate any tendency that may exist when the satchel has been filled and closed for the sides to ride up or out. The important feature, however, of
my invention is the weighted central flap on each side of the blank at a point which constitutes the bottom of the satchel when closed. These flaps extend inward a short distance and are fastened to one another in any suitable manner. They perform the functions of keeping the pamphlets held thereunder perfectl y smooth, and, moreover, prevent any accidental crushing or creasing of the contents of the satchel when closed.
.In the drawings, A represents a satchel, made from a single -piece of leather which has been cut, folded, and strapped for immediate use. In constructing the satchel A, a blank, B, is first out from the leather of substantially the shape and form shown in Fig. 2, and the regulating-flaps O G and D D, on opposite sides to each other, respectively, are creased on the linesff, in order that they may be folded inwardly and secured to one another by the ribbon b. The central part of the blank, being the space between the longitudinal lines e e, constituting the bottom of the satchel when closed, is creased on these lines for the reception of the weighted flaps E and E. These central weighted flaps are weighted in any suitable manner, and are rounded off upon their under sides, as shown at c in Fig. 2. to fit loosely in the recess d, thus formed in the bottom of the blank. The outside flap, F, of the blank is creased on the interior lines, a a, for the purposes of allowing it, when the satchel is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, to projeot down over the front of the satchel, and to be secured to it by straps 99, or other suitable mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a folding satchel made from a single piece of leather or similar material, the combination, with the bottom and sides, of the regulatingflaps and central weighted flaps, as and for the purposes specified.
ROBT. MOFFLY.
