NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
OHARLES H. ERY, JR., OE WHEELING, wES'r VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE- HALE To CHARLES M. RHODES, OE RRIDGEPORT, OHIO.
CAP FOR FRUIT-JARS.
SPECIFICTION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,492, dated September 15, 1885.
Application filed January 26, 1885. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, CHARLES H. FRY, Jr., a resident of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful-Improvementsin Caps for Fruit-J ars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,\vhich form a part.
of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in caps for fruit-jars; and it has for its objects to provide a cap which can be readily applied to and removed from the jars, and which will effectually exclude the air when applied, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a sectional view of the upper part of the fruit-jar and cap constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a top View of the jar with the cap in place. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a modification in construction.
The letter A indicatesajar or other similar vessel having an annular' recess, B, around the mouth for the purpose hereinafter more fully explained.
The letter C indicates the cover, which is constructed in two parts, having downturned edges a b, the edges a extending below the edges b. One of these parts sets over the other, the two being secured together at the center, as indicated by the letter d. Between the two parts is secured a broad gasket, E, lpreferably of rubber, which extends down below the lower edge of the inner part ofthe cover. 4o The lower portion of the rubber band inclines inward to the center, so that when the cover is applied to the jar the free edge of the band or gasket will turn inward and be forced downv into the groove around the mouth of the jar by the edge of the cover, as shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, packing the gasket on each side of its downturned edge, forming a secure and absolutely tight joint. The downturned edge rests upon the outer part of the mouth of the jar, 5o and the cap is held in place by a` bent-wirev spring-clamp, F, as shown. l
In Fig. 3 another form of construction is shown, whereby the gasket is secured to the lid without the aid of the secondary cap b, as shown in Fig. l. K is the cover, having annular corrngations e caround the downturned edge for the purpose of holding the rubber gasket G securely in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I 6o claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a jar having an annular groove at the mouth, of the cap provided with a downturned edge, and a gasket eX- tending down and around the same and packed in the groove on each side of the edge when the gasket is in place, substantially as specitied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 7o my own I hereby affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
