IMPROVED CLASP FOR LAMP-SHADES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,921, dated September 12, 1865.

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN REIGHMANN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Ulasp or Support for Lamp- Shades; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line :0 00, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.

The object of this invention is to obtain a clasp or support for lamp-shades which may be cheaply constructed and applied to the shade with the greatest facility.

The clasp or support is constructed of a strip of metal, A, which may be of equal width throughout its entire length and curved or bent in annular form, the circle, when not compressed, being larger in diameter than the opening in the top of the shade B, in which opening the clasp is fitted. This metal strip A has springs 0 attached to its inner side. Three springs may be used, and of the form now employed on the ordinary clasps. These springs may be attached to the metal strip in any proper manner, and they, as usual, grasp the lampchimney. The strip A has a groove, a, made longitudinally in it by means of swaging or otherwise, and below this groove the strip A is of flaring form, as shown at b. I

From the above description it will be seen that by compressing the annular strip or clasp A so as to reduce its diameter it may be fitted in the circular opening in the top or apex of the shade B, and that by releasing the clasp A of the pressure it will by its own elasticity expand, so that the upper edge of the shade will fit snugly in the groove a, the upper part of the shade resting on the lower flaring part, I), of the clasp, as shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the clasp require no fastening of any kind, and hence it may be readily applied to and detached from the shade.

0 represents a wire frame, which is of conical form, corresponding to the shape of the shade B. This frame has the upper ends of its wires a bent in the form of hooks to fit in holes in the lower part of the strip A, as shown at d in Fig. 1. This frame serves as a support for the shade, keeping it in shape and rendering it more durable than it otherwise would be.
