Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ENCE.
VANIA, ASSIGNORS 'TO Vi/YM. E.
lM-PROVEMENT inv APPARATUS tonen-annee ease-n oen-tariav LOGKWOD, 0F SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lh'nw, dated September 12, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
lshaped rollers, arranged and operating sub'- stantially as described hereinafter, in order lo impart lo paper collars the desired shape, both laterally and longitudinally, at one operation.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art lo uiakeand use our invention, we will nowpro ceed lo describe its construction and operation.
O11 rel'erenee to the accom pauying drawings, which lorrn a part; of this specilicatiou, Figure l is a side View ot' our improved machine for shaping paper collars; Fie. 2, a transverse section, and Fig. 3a ground plan.
Similarletters referto similar parts-through ont the several views.. "i
A is the base, and B and B are the two standards or frames of the machine, in which turns a shaft, D, havinga cog-wheel, E, gea-r; ing' into a similar wheel,rF, onnthe shaft G, the latter turning' in boxes E H, which are arranged to slide in vertical openings in the frames, the ends ofse-t-'screws l l, which pass through these frames. liraringon the tops ot the said boxes2 To the shal't D .is secured a roller, J, and to *the shaftV G a. roller, K, "the rollers being .adapted to each other, and being of the shapeshown, or others'hapelbestxdapted for im partingthe desired lateral bend to the collar. Asother roller, L, adapted to the roller K, Vis ranged to turn freelyr on a pin, M, secured plate, N, which is so attached to aframe, Bray means ot' a set-screw, a, that it can be readily adjusted.'
The several rollers bear the relative position to each other shown in Fig. 2, and are arranged to revolve in the' direction pointed ont by the arrows. '.llh'e collar to -be shaped is passed eudwisebetween the rollers J and K, and is directed by a rod, fr, upward, so as to pass between the rollers K and M. In' thus passing bet-ween'tbe rollers the collar is bent laterally iu conformity with the, shape ot the rollers1 and this shape is such that the lateral bend imparted to the collar will be'thatbest adapted t0 the shape ofthe Wearers neck.
Independently ol` the lateral shapingot the -eollarit must oli' necessity be, bent longitudinally, owing to the relative position of the rollers, so that by passing the collar between the latter in the manner described the proper shape laterally and longitudinally must heiniparted to it atl one operation.
The rollers may be made hollow, and may be heated by the introduction ot' strain or by suitable heated irons, so that the shape imparted to the collar may he more permanent.
'We claim as our invention, and'tlesirc to se cure by Letters Patentlhe three rollers J, K, and M, the said rollers being otthe torni substantially-as illustrated, and being,r arrzniged and operating in the mam 'ner described.
In testimony e hereof we have signed our naines to this' s peciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
