Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
DETACHABLE ROCKERS FOR CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,741, dated February 20, 1866; antedated February 1B, 1866.
To all whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PINKERMAN, ot' the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut., have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode of Constructing Rockers for Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of adjustable sockets to the rockers ot' rocking-chairs to receive the lower end of the legs oi' the chairs, and to be detachablefrom them when required.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe thc construction and operation.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of the socket when tiXed on the rocker and chair; Fig. 2, a transverse section ot' the same.
The unavoidable extension ofthe rockers of the variety ot' easy-chairs beyond the limits of the frame ot' the body and seat ot' the chair is a matter of' great inconvenience and expense in many cases. For instance, in packing for shipping and vai ious modes ot' transportation -4 and in the endless custom ot' removing` from one house to another the rockers of the rock ing-chair are always in the way, and Irequire more space in packing and stowin g for transportation or removal than any other piece of vfurniture of like dimensions. This inconvenience and annoyance cannot be avoided, because the legs ofthe chairs are in all cases permanently attached to the rockers, consequently cannot be removed.
My present invention is intended to remedy this matter by the arrangement of my metallic sockets claspin g the rockers and receiving the lower end of the legs of the chair into the same/ias described in the drawings attached to this specification.
In forming my sockets the lower dan ges, A A, are made to clasp the rocker G, and are tirinly fastened by the screws B B at any required distance apart to suit the legs ot' the chairs, and the rockers by this means can at any time be shifted, regulated, and balanced to a nicety and according to fancy.
I form the mortise or space C ot" any required form or size to receive the lowcr end ot' the chair-legs D. The legs being passed into the mortise C, there is a set-screw, F, on the inner flange to pass into and fasten the leg in the mortise. This screw F may be a thumbscrew or any other equivalent device or arrangement for the purpose, provided that it can be made easily and instantly available, when required, forremoval or transportation.
I tn ake the socket of malleable iron, brass, or anyother suitable material cfa light, plain, or ornamental pattern of any proper size or form.
The utility, convenience, and economy of this simple arrangement will be manifest to every one.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable socket for the rockers ot' rocking-chairs., constructed and arranged su bstantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM PINKERMAN.
