Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo HORATIO K. BATES, OF VNORTH LA GROSSE, WISCONSIN.
GRATE-BAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 55,603, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HORATIO K. BATES, of North La Crosse, in the State of Visconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Grate-Bars for Locomotives and other Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the folowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
The grate-bar of my improvement is what I term the offset77 or dropped77 grate-bar. By its use an increased fire-surface is produced without the expense or delay of piercing down the fire-box, and a direct draft across t-he surface or face of the bars is allowed. All the advantages of the hoppergrate are obtained without the disadvantage of the closed bottom.
The drawings forming part of this specilication exhibitA my improvement, Figure l thereof being a View had by looking` down upon the grate-surface, and Fig. 2 a View by vertical section on the red lille ot' Fig. l.
In both of these figures, where like parts are shown like marks and letters are used to indicate the parts.
The form of the bar (t is shown by Fig. 2. It will be seen therefrom that from both ends the bar is inclined down, but for the other portion of its length is straight. The ends of the bar rest upon a cross-bar. b, held by lugs c, bolted to the bottom ofthe fire-box c. The side bars, d, are straight bars. Fig. l shows the entire grate-surface made up ot' the two side bars and the dropped bars cast in three sections; but, as is evident, the number of sections, and the number of bars forming each section may be different from what is here shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The offset or dropped grate-box herein set forth and shown. v
This specification signed this 6th dayof September, 1865.
HORATIO K. BATES.
