, lPatented June 5, 1866. v
N. PETERS Phem-Lnhngmvher wnshmgmn D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,360, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom t 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, S. T. W. POTTER, of Scott, in the county of Cortland and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Ohurn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accomlianying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l isa vertical section of' a churn-box having my improvements applied thereto, taken on the plane of the linear x, Fig. 3. Fig.l 2 is a transverse section taken ou the plane of the line y y, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view ot' the device with a lid thrown back, the operating mechanism having been removed, the plane of section taken ou the line Z Z, Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in a novel construction of the dashers employed for agitating the cream in a churn for producing butter.
A designates the body of the churn, which is a quadrangular box ot' any appropriate size.
l From opposite sides ot` the churn-body there arise two standards, B B, secured together at the top by a cross-piece, a.
O is a double crank-shaft journaled in the standards B. Two cranks, b b, extend in opposite directions from the shatt O, each crank carrying a pitman, D, connected to thedasherrods,t'or imparting alternate up-and-down motion to the dashers. The crank carries on one end a gear-wheel, c, which is operated by a larger gear-wheel, d, which latter carries a winch, c. The other end ofthe shaft carries a y-wheel,f.
The special novelty of this churn consists in the construction and arrangement of the dashers. To the lower end ot' each dasher-rod o there is secured a longitudinal strip or arm, E, having a convex or rounding face. The object of having' the face rounding is to throw the cream from the sides of the churn to the center.
F F are the loats of the dashers. Those on the one arm are so arranged relatively with those on the other arm that they will pass each otherthat is, they are alternate. This will be understood by reference to Fig. 3.
To the dasher-rod g, above the arm E, there is secured a strip, G, the strip on the one rod being carried round Iacross one end of themachine and the strip on theother around the other end ot' the machine. These strips I term scrapers because ofthe otlice they performthat is, they act as scrapers for scraping the cream from the sides of the churn and throwing it down into the body of the churn to be acted upon by the dashers. The dasher-rods are guided in their course in any suitable manner.
The lid of the churn is made in two parts, each ot' which is provided with a glass, n, Fig. 3, for enabling a person to see inside the churn without opening the lid.
The dashers and scrapers operate efficiently upon the cream; and by their use l 'am enabled to produce a large quantity of butter from a given quantity of cream in a shortI space of time.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The Heats F, secured to the dasher-rods g, constructed and arranged substantially as described.l
The scrapers G, in combination with the tloa-ts F, substantially as shown and described.
S. T. W. POTTER.
